Join us this Friday for the opening reveption of 'An Oregon Art Beat" retrospective exhibit', created in collaboration with and .

The opening reception is free, open to all, and runs from 4-7pm. Meet the artists and fellow supporters of the arts, and buy and rent exceptional, locally-made, works of art.

This show will feature the work of 25 of our Member Artists, all of who have been featured on OPB’s “Oregon Art Beat". This showcase celebrates the legacy of this long-running series and the ongoing contributions of the Portland Art Museum and Rental Sales Gallery in supporting and elevating artists throughout Oregon.

Let's meet the final five artists who will be showcased as part of 'An "Oregon Art Beat" Retrospective Exhibit', created in collaboration with . We're so proud to showcase all 25 of these artists.

After a 35-year career as a pharmacist, Sarkis Antikajian () attained his childhood dream of becoming a professional painter and is now a nationally recognized and award-winning artist. He paints and draws in oils, watercolors, pastels, and inks. His varied subject matter includes figurative, landscape, still life,and abstract.

Sidonie Caron's works span a broad, rich spectrum of subjects. She says, "As you look through the different bodies of work displayed here, you will see that I am an eclectic painter. I respond to life’s influences, my travels, and my environment by making work that reflects all this." Sidonie has a decades-long relationship with the Rental Sales Gallery, showing many hundreds of works in that time.

Sue Allen () is a printmaker with a focus on screen printing. Artistic directions range from nature and organic order to abstraction and geometry and veers repeatedly toward the Japanese aesthetic and beauty. Her art is distinguished, refined, elegant, and unusual. Over the years, she has exhibited widely, has done many shows and festivals, and has her work in numerous galleries and shops.

Thomas Rude () says this about his work: “My artwork refers to a journey through my own mysterious world, churning up artifacts, looking for answers. It is a dramatization of that which is significant to me when I go to make art. The shapes, colors, materials, ingredients are all specific and agonized over and accidentally stumbled upon. It is often surprising what comes flapping or oozing out and what remains persistently elusive.”

William Hernandez () is a Portland-based painter whose artwork creates a bridge spanning his past traditions and memories to his life today as an artist, family man and Peruvian living in the Pacific Northwest. His surreal subjects and graphic, illustrative style creates layered narratives infused with lingering emotions from whimsy to melancholy.

It's time to meet five more of our Member Artists who are part of 'An "Oregon Art Beat" Retrospective Exhibit', created in collaboration with !

When it comes to art, Michael Schlicting () is out of touch with reality. What he is in touch with is the visceral emotion that a scene evokes. Mood, feeling and universal longing are the subjects of his art rather than literal, physical realism. It is this probing, intuitive exploration that has given Schlicting's art a deeper level of meaning.

Too edgy to be a fairytale but with a surrealist exuberance at home in a storybook, a painting by Paula Bullwinkel () is a study in paradox, multiplicity, and doubling, as well as an occasion for lavish color, rich texture, layered symbolism, and all the plausible impossibilities of dream logic.

Working directly from life outdoors or in the studio, Peggie Mojé () creates Impressionist paintings that capture the illusive beauty of light and color. "Painting en plein air is my 'Indiana Jones' adventure: battling the rain, sun, wind, bugs and changing light conditions, I hope to capture a vision of the beauty of the landscape around me."

Robert Schlegel's intuitive painting style was representational of nature and a reflection of the northwest landscape.  As a native Oregonian, Schlegel found inspiration in the coastal estuaries, valleys, and farmlands of the northwest. Beginning in plein-aire with bold, innovative line work, Schlegel blended realism and abstraction. Through contrast, texture, and color, Schlegel explored form and shape, where the natural world collides with objects that are man-made.

A passion for color drives the work of Ruth Armitage (), which focuses on abstraction but sometimes includes plein-air landscapes. She enjoys vacillating between watercolor, acrylic and oil painting. In her new work, she delves into the enigmatic interplay between darkness and light, and explores moments of both struggle and serenity.

Let's meet another 5 artists who are part of 'An "Oregon Art Beat" Retrospective Exhibit', created in collaboration with Oregon Art Beat!

For Leslie Ann Butler Art, in retrospect, it seems obvious that she would become an artist: her father, mother and great-grandmother were all artists. From this, she worked and became an accomplished and highly-regarded portrait painter, commissioned by people across the country. She moved into abstracts later, creating affecting pieces in her 'Meditations' and 'Illumination' series.

Lindsey Joy Holcomb Art is a Japanese-American interdisciplinary artist, speaker, and writer. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2017, she established an initiative called Colors of MS ( ). This project has transformed over 300 individual MRIs into abstract artworks, while also providing a platform for diverse narratives surrounding MS diagnoses. Her creative practice is deeply influenced by her personal experiences with multiple sclerosis and neurodiversity.

MJ Anderson has been sculpting stone for almost 40 years now. She selects marble, travertine, and onyx from quarries and stone yards of Carrara, Italy for her iconic sculptures. She splits her time between Carrara and Nehalem. In Oregon, she takes the roughly-worked sculptures and marble and transforms them into the finished pieces. "I have a foot in both places", she says, "and am lucky to be able to walk along the shores of both the Pacific and Mediterranean."

Masterful use of natural pigments along with a passion for oil painting techniques of the past have made Margret Short one of the most prestigious oil painting artists of today. Her magical canvases are sought by collectors and museums alike. Her works can be found all across the world.

Melissa Monroe is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist creating my visions in textiles, sculpture, and acrylic paintings. Her work explores the intensity of being alive. "I transform emotion into sculptural forms that slow time and inspire wonder. All the work becomes a mask - radiating beauty while holding life's harsher truths."

Let's continue to meet the artists who will be part of 'An "Oregon Art Beat" Retrospective Exhibit', created in collaboration with Oregon Art Beat .

The show opens on Friday, June 5th, and will showcase 25 of our Member Artists, who have all appeared on the flagship arts show 'Oregon Art Beat'.

Don MacLane is an artist who creates kinetic sculptures. His interactive sculptures invite you to explore and alter the rhythmic interplay between their moving parts. As Don explains, "Exploration starts as the viewer pushes the piece for the first time then continues with successive pushes at difference to the initial angles and speeds." His works are elegantly made and beautiful when both in motion and at rest.

Eric Boyer works in wire mesh has grown from many source materials, expressions, and processes. It was while employed in a blacksmith shop in Southern Vermont in the mid-eighties that he got his hands on scraps of woven mesh, trimmed off during fireplace screen fabrication. From these simple beginnings, he produced beautiful abstract and figurative works, all filled with an incredible sense of movement.

George Johanson is a legendary figure in the Oregon arts community. A painter, printmaker, ceramic tile artist, teacher, writer and documentary film-maker, George studied at the Museum Art School in Portland with further study in New York and London. He taught at the Museum Art School (now the Pacific Northwest College of Art) for 25 years until his retirement in 1980. He was a Member Artist at RSG for many decades.

Jesse Reno creates work that he best describes as "Contemporary Primitive" and "Abstract Narrative". Jesse, a self-taught mixed media painter, and describes his work in this way: "for me painting is - finding treasure - what it is - what it means - if you know what you are looking for you will find it"

Karen Wippich creates truly unique figurative work. As she says, "I make art because I can see no other reason to be on this earth. My work explores personal and political narratives through enigmatic imagery that can be at once both playful and satirical.

We're very excited to introduce the artists who are part of our collaborative show with Oregon Art Beat. 'An "Oregon Art Beat" Retrospective Exhibit.

Please join us in welcoming the first 5 artists!

Andrea Benson, here represented by her beautiful work 'Blue Waves', is an encaustic and mixed media artist. She had a deep background in the arts, working in drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics, paper making and sewing, which she brings to her contemporary practice.

Anton Pavlenko Artist is a self-taught landscape painter whose work explores themes of identity, memory, and place. Born in Ukraine, he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1990, where he began to discover his artistic voice, finding a deep and unexpected connection to the vast, untamed landscapes of the American West.

Carolyn Cole finds her voice within the rich traditions of abstraction and creates a cohesive body of work that translates into a language of intense color, sumptuous textures, and organic compositions. Her forms are instinctually achieved through the process of applying multiple layers of pigment, and her textured surfaces result from this process.

Cathleen Rehfeld Fine Arts is constantly amazed by what she sees here in the Great Pacific Northwest, and wants to share it with you. Her paintings represent what she finds beautiful and interesting in the world. She wants to bring that beauty into other people’s environments and share the joy and optimism she feels.

Don Bishop Studio has been painting in the Northwest for many years, and enjoys painting the magical scenery and light that makes this such a beautiful area. Spring and summer months often find him painting outside in the plein air style, while the winter months bring mostly studio work.
