While in the woods near their small town, upstanding local Hank (Bill Paxton), his brother Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton) and their friend Lou (Brent Briscoe) discover a crashed plane with a stash of four million dollars. Although Hank is reluctant to keep the money, Jacob and Lou convince him otherwise, and they devise a plan to split the fortune. Willamette Week talks to head programmer Dan Halsted's on his picks for Bleak Week! Our lineup starts this Friday, 6/19 through Thursday, 6/25.

American Cinematheque in Los Angeles spearheaded Bleak Week films in 2022. Last year, Hollywood Theatre was invited to be one of its first venues outside of Los Angeles. This year, nearly 100 theaters in 73 cities around the world were invited to participate.

"Programming the Hollywood’s version of the event came easily to Halsted. All of the films have either new 35 mm prints or 4K restorations available that he’s been itching to put up on screen. Tying them to Bleak Week makes sure they don’t get overlooked on the calendar. Beyond that, Halsted had to consider the subtle differences between depressing, disturbing and bleak (see sidebar). Halsted was looking for movies that stick with viewers for days after leaving the theater, in a way that truly crushes the spirit." - Rachel Saslow, Willamette Week

In the week leading up to the Hollywood Theatre's centennial on July 17, we're presenting a showcase of the formats, genres, and experiences that have defined moviegoing here for generations including a recreation of Opening Day with the first film that ever played the Hollywood accompanied by our rockstar pipe organist Dean Lemire; a very special screening of DEATH PROOF with Zoë Bell in attendance (special thanks to Dangerous Entertainment) presented by Can You Blame Her?; and so much more.

Hollywood 100 honors the many ways audiences have experienced film over the past century while celebrating the community that continues to keep that tradition alive. We hope you'll join us as we mark 100 years of the Hollywood Theatre.

Floating World Comics is bringing the chain-rattling spirit of EC Comics back from the grave with a special screaming of George Romero and Stephen King’s horror anthology monsterfeast, CREEPSHOW!

But that’s not all! Floating World’s own Tim Goodyear (Video Tonfa) will be haunting the lobby before the film with a specially curated table of comics, books, and assorted four-color nightmares from Floating World, before performing an introduction to the movie as the lights go down!

Get to the Hollywood Theatre at 6pm to browse the macabre wares, and 7:30pm for the feature presentation!

FWC will also have a limited number of event posters straight from Tim’s panel-riddled brain available for purchase!
