"The feelings that hurt most… are the ones that cannot be expressed." Louise Bourgeois carried a lifetime of unhealed pain. The deepest wound that shaped her life was her childhood trauma: her father’s betrayal of her mother, growing up surrounded by fear, anger, and shock she never fully overcame. She grew up feeling “unsafe”, and the home that was supposed to give her comfort was the very place that broke her. These memories haunted her throughout her life, surfacing in her sculptures, drawings, and works — all filled with anxiety, tension, and wounded motherhood. Louise Bourgeois was one of the most influential sculptors and installation artists of the 20th century, globally recognized for her powerful, expressive works that merge personal pain with artistic innovation.
