Ottawa promised to "Buy Canadian." What does the contract data show? 🇨🇦

A Toronto Star analysis of federal procurement data found that American-controlled multinational corporations have dominated the most lucrative federal contracts under Prime Minister Mark Carney. In the government's first 16 months, an estimated $7.8 billion in contracts went to American-controlled corporations, compared with $14.9 billion to Canadian companies. The four highest-grossing federal contractors are all American-controlled, and the share of contract dollars going to U.S.-controlled firms rose from about one-fifth to nearly a third.

Some context: "U.S.-controlled" includes Canadian subsidiaries of American multinationals, and some brands show up in procurement data as Canadian. The government's Buy Canadian policy took effect on December 16, 2025, so much of the period the Star analyzed came before it. Public Services and Procurement Canada didn't answer the Star's questions on the proportion.

B.C. NDP Leader and Premier David Eby is promising higher income taxes on top earners if he wins re-election on October 24. The plan would:

Raise the rate from 16.8% to 18.8% on income between $190,405 and $265,545
Raise the rate from 20.5% to 22.5% on income between $265,545 and $1 million
Add a new 24.5% rate on income above $1 million

The changes would start in the 2027 tax year. The NDP says the plan would raise about $1 billion a year and affect about 3.88% of B.C. income earners. Daily Hive's example: someone with $200,000 in taxable income would pay about $192 more a year.

The BC Conservatives call it a "doctor tax," arguing it hits the income range of the physicians the province is trying to recruit from Alberta and the U.S. Eby says people at the top need to chip in more while families face rising costs, and he points to hundreds of U.S. health workers who have joined B.C.'s public system, with his plan tripling the recruitment campaign.

Is this a fair way to fund health care, or will it hurt doctor recruitment? Tell us in the comments 👇

Quebec has voted, and the Parti Québécois is on top. 🇨🇦

CBC News is projecting that the Parti Québécois will form a minority government, making Paul St-Pierre Plamondon the next premier. The PQ is projected to win 59 seats, five short of the 64 needed for a majority. The Liberals are second with 40 seats and the Conservatives third with 19. Québec solidaire is projected to win nine ridings, and the CAQ had none at last count. CAQ leader Christine Fréchette lost her seat in Trois-Rivières.

Prime Minister Mark Carney congratulated St-Pierre Plamondon on election night. A CBC analysis says the PQ government will be a major test for Carney, since the threat of a Quebec referendum hasn't been on the federal radar for more than a decade.

A new Toronto Star analysis is raising questions about "Buy Canadian." 🇨🇦

Ottawa's online safety bill is back, and it's a big one. 🇨🇦

Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act, was introduced on June 10, 2026 by Canadian Identity and Culture Minister Marc Miller. It is the federal government's third attempt at online safety legislation.

Here's what it proposes:

A temporary ban on social media accounts for people under 16, backed by age verification
A new Digital Safety Commission to oversee and enforce the rules
A duty on platforms to act responsibly, including on content used to bully a child, content that induces a child to self-harm, child sexual abuse material and intimate images shared without consent
New rules for AI chatbot services

Not everything is covered. One October 5 report says the bill won't create a specific category for websites that promote su***de. Previous versions of this legislation stalled over free-speech concerns, and the debate is expected to continue.
