AI Without the Hype with Scott Hanselman
Saturday, September 5 @ NedSpace | Portland’s first coworking space since 2009

AI is moving fast enough that it can make you reconsider your own career in a very real way.
▪️ Why did I try so hard?
▪️ Why did I get the degree?
▪️ What does all this work mean now?

If you have had those thoughts, you are not alone. That is a big part of why we are bringing Scott in.

Scott Hanselman is a Microsoft Vice President and Member of Technical Staff working on Open Source, Windows and the Azure Cloud Developer Experience.

He has been a programmer for over thirty years and has also worked at Intel and Nike. He has spent a couple of decades explaining hard technical things to people without making them feel small about it.

He said something on our Silicon Forest Tech Summit stage that stuck with the room:

" AI isn't meant to replace builders. It's meant to multiply them"

On September 5 he's back, for a talk and an open conversation.

What these tools are actually good at right now, where they fall over, and how to build something real with them. No pitch, no hand waving.

Bring questions like:
Where does AI actually help in my work, and where is it a waste of time?
What should I learn first if I'm starting now?
Is this coming for my job, and what do I do about it?

There are no bad questions in this room, and nobody is expected to arrive already knowing. That's the whole point of doing it together.

Sound, Vision, Machine by Reese Bowes

Yesterday Reese took us inside TouchDesigner and showed how approachable real time AV work has become.

We do this to build community and learn together. If you're an expert, it's a refresher and a reason to step outside and be around people. If you're learning right now, you get to do it alongside others on the same path. And if you're curious or just lurking (like me), it's the best way to see how far these tools have come.

In one session we went from the basics to:
▪️Audio reactive visuals that move on every beat
▪️Live computer vision driving graphics from a person's position on camera
▪️ Restyling live video with AI prompts as it plays, all running locally on a laptop with Claude as the live coding assistant

In a world moving faster than ever, resilience matters just as much as innovation.

One of the most powerful reminders from the Silicon Forest Tech Summit was that the strongest systems and the strongest people are not the ones that never face pressure, but the ones designed to grow through it.

Asmae’s talk challenged us to rethink how we build in the age of AI, cybersecurity, and rapid technological change. Not just building fast, but building with intention, trust, adaptability, and community in mind.

“Root deeply. Flex, don’t break.”

That message will stay with me for a long time.
