Hi Folks!

I’m excited to host my next Draw-In tomorrow, Saturday, July 8th, from 1pm-5pm at Carnation Contemporary as part of the WAVE Collective group show, “Friend of a Friend”. This event will continue my focus on building community connections by using experimental drawing prompts and the element of chance to get to know each other in new ways. As always, the invitation is open to anyone and everyone who would like to participate— take a moment to meet new people or convene with friends, see the current show and try something new. Feel free to bring your own drawing supplies or use those provided. I hope to see you there!

My contribution to the “Friend of a Friend” show at Carnation Contemporary is a 24 x 24” installation that incorporates bits and pieces of images from 26 Mind Map entries, all made on July 1st, between 2010-2021 (some shown in full in this post). Titled, “I20230701_July Expanded”, I made this installation out of different kinds of adhesive tape over 2 days on June 30 and July 1, 2023, compounding the overall creation date as 13 years, 2010-2023. Originally planned as a print, I decided instead to emphasize a more contradictory aspect of time that’s been resonating strongly with me.

The tape installation was a way to accentuate both the importance of date-created subject matter and also the frivolity of quantifying time at all. It represents permanence and also temporality. It signifies growth, and also decay. It references outside resources and also its own existence. The ex*****on of it is both rule-based and rigid and also riddled with mistakes and anti-didactic, as a visual cacophony-of-sorts. Most of all, it was fun to make. It felt like a joyful spectacle— a play on writing on gallery walls. Unlike other tape installations I’ve made in the past,* I created elements that were more like an actual drawing or painting here, using tape to edit or erase certain parts and also to build up places to create density and “worked” areas. A small, partly angled piece of yellow tape was intentionally placed outside of the bottom right corner of the composition as a comical nod to the early aughts, and paintings that were made so quickly for immediate sales during the housing bubble that drips were frequent and almost celebrated as a sign of true cultural significance and value in the overall aesthetic of the piece. As time is a construct of memory and creativity is the soul manifesting itself, all of these things felt like relative socioeconomic end points to reference in a show that relies on time and space to be able to make human connections.

As this show’s theme is about connecting with community, a serendipitous quote from July 1, 2021 stood out to me while collecting my research to make the piece— “The less we interact with something the more we fear it.” It resonates when I think about communities and cultures, our shadow selves, and general anxieties that present to us in uncertain times. I hope that we all can choose a little more love over fear when confronting personal difficulties.

I feel very fortunate to be a part of this group show, opening tomorrow at Carnation Contemporary from 5-8pm. It's humbling to be in the presence of so many wonderful artists and friends alike, both as a member of WAVE Contemporary and also through the local community—

“Friend of a Friend invites you on a journey exploring the intricate web of community and relationships that shape our lives. The exhibition delves into the profound connections we forge, the bonds we nurture, and the influence of those around us. WAVE Contemporary is a Portland-based art collective dedicated to fostering and facilitating rich relationships within the contemporary art community. Wave Contemporary is rooted in supporting contemporary art that is inclusive, communal, and responsive in nature.

To shape this exhibition, each member of WAVE invited another artist, who has also invited another artist, allowing the exhibit to expand in unpredictable ways. The physical artwork in the space —as it connects, communicates, collides, converges, and unites the artists in formal, conceptual and social ways— births a new discourse with the promise to influence and generate ever expanding conversations.

At the heart of this exhibition lies the belief that our sense of belonging and well-being is deeply entwined with our connections to others. By highlighting the inherent value of friendship, kinship, and community, Friend of a Friend aims to inspire viewers to cultivate and cherish their own relationships, fostering empathy and nurturing the ties that bind us all. Join us in this celebration of human interconnectedness, guided by the realization that our lives are deeply enriched by the friendships and relationships we cultivate.”

Throw back to January, when I held my last Draw-In, also to support the Mind Map book fundraiser. I have another one coming up in July!
..

On Saturday January 28th, from 3-7pm, Reuben Breslar invites all to participate in a work-in-progress hosted by After/Time Collective. The “Draw-In”, as Breslar calls it, will provide the unique opportunity to sit, draw, and talk with strangers and friends alike. The purpose is to celebrate the individual while upholding community awareness.

“In 2007, I began hosting community-based Happenings called ‘Draw-Ins’ that transformed galleries into sites of social intervention. I was interested in exploring the social politics of galleries by addressing the functional roles that they play in their communities. As the Happenings have to do with organizing people, creating a ritual and growing together through a vulnerable experience, I want to combat our over-mediated reality with an opportunity to celebrate the human experience directly, involving elements of physicality, behavior, and trust.”
This event occurs concurrently with the fundraiser for Breslar’s first book, The Mind Map Archive, a ten-year social science project rooted in art and mental health. Celebrating over a decade of community collaborations and artistic development, Breslar is thrilled to be hosting his first Happening in Portland at After/Time Collective.

Drinks, pencils, and paper will be provided and feel free to bring your own drawing materials and sketchbook! This event is free and open to the public.

The Mind Map Archive will be a curated 300 page, full color, ebook, based on a series of over 3,000 visual and verbal compositions completed between 2010-2020. Currently arranged on 8.5 x 11” Xerox paper, located in sheet protectors and housed in office binders, the subject matter is a ten-year social science project rooted in art and mental health. The book will explain my journey of self-discovery through a unique method of visual storytelling, including text accompaniment.

With your help, I will be able to afford the time to complete the Mind Map Archive by analyzing the entries for common threads, patterns and themes. The knowledge I gather from the research phase of this project will also go directly back into my creative communities, through newly constructed lesson plans, community-driven projects and individual art projects. Developing this book will further help to establish myself as a human resource of trauma-informed, creative healing practices, as I seek to collaborate with like minds and organizations. My dream is to bring accessible tools and alternative practices to a wide range of age groups and demographics to bolster our human connections through holistic self acceptance.
