Check out my fabric stash!

For as much as I sew, I have a very small fabric stash. Because the natural dye process is so slow and involved, I don’t accumulate much fabric and try to use what I have. If I need a new color for a project, it will take a couple weeks before it’s ready to use. This forces patience and intention.

I have three places in my studio where I store fabric. The first is my main stash. Here is where all of my dyed and undyed yardage live. This fabric is ready to use when inspiration strikes!

The second place I store fabric is for fabric in process. I have three separate baskets: one for fabric that is scoured and ready to mordant, one for fabric that is mordanted and ready to dye, and a third for fabric that has been recently dyed and is curing. Once fabric has received its final rinse, it moves to my main stash.

The last place I store fabric is a basket for scraps. I keep this in clear bags organized by color to use for smaller projects such as my mini landscapes. I also have a bag of very small scraps of all colors that I use to create new pieces for the River Rocks collection.

My heart is full.

I am home from Bend after a wonderful time attending Art in the High Desert. I am so grateful for every person who stopped by to say hi, to share a story, to admire, to ask questions, and to purchase a piece of art from me. I am overwhelmed by the many beautiful interactions and kind response to my work. My art is a reflection of my soul, and it feels vulnerable to show it to the world. Thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to indulge in my corner of the world for a moment. I appreciate you ♥️

I aim to waste as little as possible in my art practice. Each piece of hand dyed fabric feels so precious, and I try to use every scrap. My Sea Stones collection was born out of this intention. These pieces have become my most popular and some of my favorite pieces to create.

These process begins by arranging scraps onto fusible webbing. Once fusing is attached, I hand cut each piece into organic shapes representing smooth, water worn stones. These are then arranged into a composition on fabric, then fused, quilted, and stretched onto a wooden frame. These process is intuitive and meditative.

The creative process requires trust.

For months I’ve felt certain about the next stage of evolution of my work. I finally worked up the courage to attempt it, to make something in this new vision and…it fell flat. It wasn’t as inspiring as I had built it up in my mind. I didn’t feel moved.

So I’ve been playing rather aimlessly. Rather than jump into a project with a vision, I’ve let my hands guide me. Rather than creating from my head, I’m creating from my heart. And I feel a new direction emerging, coming into clarity. I’m excited to share what evolves from this new space.

If you’re feeling stuck creatively, get out of your head. Just make something. You may be surprised what is waiting to be discovered 💕

I have a new collection of botanical inspired work now available!

Each piece is hand-painted onto organic linen with plant dye paste (church or madder root) and finished with bold hand quilting stitches onto a naturally dyed background. Hanging tabs and a plum tree branch make for easy display. I have six of these one of a kind pieces in the shop!

A different kind of post from me today…

10 years ago today, I had the honor and privilege of meeting His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. He came to speak at the school in New Delhi, India where I was working as a 1st grade teacher. I have carried his message of compassion and kindness with me ever since, and find myself needing it more today than ever.

There are over 8 billion human beings on this planet today. It is easy to focus on our differences: of color, of religion, of ethnicity, of wealth, but all of these are artificial categories that we created. During his talk, the Dalai Lama asserted, “On fundamental level, we are same.” Only when we begin to see ourselves in others, recognize the interdependence that connects us all, view everyone as one, can we begin to fix the problems that we have created for ourselves. Not to deny our differences; indeed this is what makes us beautiful. But to understand that we are all far more alike than we are different. And this sense of compassion for all, of unity as a human race leads to sense of universal responsibility. Minnesota recently showed a great example of this.

Show compassion today. To a friend. To a loved one. To yourself.

(The final photo was what one of my student had created that day during free choice time. She said “it’s the Dalai Lama teaching the world about kindness!” There is hope ♥️).
