A different kind of post from me today…

10 years ago today, I had the honor and privilege of meeting His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. He came to speak at the school in New Delhi, India where I was working as a 1st grade teacher. I have carried his message of compassion and kindness with me ever since, and find myself needing it more today than ever.

There are over 8 billion human beings on this planet today. It is easy to focus on our differences: of color, of religion, of ethnicity, of wealth, but all of these are artificial categories that we created. During his talk, the Dalai Lama asserted, “On fundamental level, we are same.” Only when we begin to see ourselves in others, recognize the interdependence that connects us all, view everyone as one, can we begin to fix the problems that we have created for ourselves. Not to deny our differences; indeed this is what makes us beautiful. But to understand that we are all far more alike than we are different. And this sense of compassion for all, of unity as a human race leads to sense of universal responsibility. Minnesota recently showed a great example of this.

Show compassion today. To a friend. To a loved one. To yourself.

(The final photo was what one of my student had created that day during free choice time. She said “it’s the Dalai Lama teaching the world about kindness!” There is hope ♥️).

Working on a new collection of River Rock wall hangings.

Each work in this collection is made from various pieces of naturally dyed fabric that are each hand cut and intuitively arranged and contribute to my no waste art practice. Each piece is unique and reminiscent of the movement water flowing over a rocky riverbed. Each will be finished with free motion quilting and stretched on a canvas frame.

This time, I’m offering a NEW size option! In addition to several 8”x8” and 16”x20”, I’ll have a few 12”x12” options available.

These will release sometime next month. For first access, be sure to join my email list!

The Resistance Collection is now available!

This collection of quilt blocks was created in response to the brutal events taking place across our nation and the inspirational response by people showing up to take care of each other. People who choose to see the sacredness of our shared humanity rather than the invented divisions of race and nationality. People who see their neighbor as family and the diversity of their communities as beautiful. Each block is made from naturally dyed fabric with hand-embroidered lettering.

20% of each sale is donated to the Portland Immigration Rights Coalition.

These past couple of weeks I’ve been channeling my creative energy into a series of Resistance Quilt Blocks. This project began as a study of traditional blocks and color using naturally dyed fabrics. As events have unfolded and escalated in the past few months, it became clear to me that these blocks were meant to be the canvases for messages of love, support, and action. It’s allowed me to channel my anger and sadness into a creative project and to use my hands. It feels like a small thing I can do with what’s available to me. Each piece is constructed from naturally dyed fabric and all of the words are embroidered by hand. Six are complete and more are in the works. I plan to make these available soon and will donate a portion of sales to PIRC, a local organization supporting immigrant rights.

Take care of yourself and each other out there. Let your love be fierce and loud.

At the beginning of this year, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. There has been a lot of uncertainty this year, and I didn’t expect it would be a great year for selling art. But I think people are leaning towards things that are meaningful and intentional. I think people are seeking beautiful things in their lives. This has been my best year as an artist, and I feel so supported and embraced by this wonderful community. Thank you to every single person who supported my work in any capacity. I appreciate you.

Peace out 2025.

Painting with clay on fabric.

Recently, I have been drawn to exploring some new techniques, including this resist dye technique. For each of these pieces, I have hand painted a design onto fabric and then dyed in indigo. This process was repeated three times to achieve the depth of blue and to improve color fastness.

I have a collection of indigo-dyed designs available in my shop!

I LOVE making these Sea Stones pieces. Each one is made from hand cut pieces of naturally dyed fabric that are individually placed and stitched onto the background. Each piece is finished by stretching it onto a canvas frame.

And I’m so excited to share that I am now collaborating with a local woodworker who is crafting frames made from locally sourced wood. These will be available soon!

If you want to see these in person, be sure to come by Portland Open Studios October 11-12 and 18-19. Details about this event can be found on my profile page.
