In just two weeks, on June 24th at Noon, please join us for Cameraless: Artist Talk with C. Meier.

Artist C. Meier will discuss their experimental approach to photography through their latest series Haptics (2024–ongoing), which consists of vibrant chromatic abstractions made without a camera. Meier will also share the process behind the work, the evolution of their practice, and the “artcestors” who continue to shape and inspire them.

C. Meier (American, b. 1982, they/them) is an artist, curator, and community organizer based in Portland, OR. Their art practice explores materiality, reveling in the hybridization of processes including painting, drawing and photographic methods. They earned their MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago (2017) and BFA in Studio Art from Pacific Lutheran University (2004). Meier has exhibited at Candela Books + Gallery, Hyde Park Art Center, Mana Contemporary (Chicago), Filter Space, Blue Sky, Nine Gallery, Solas Gallery, Carnation Contemporary, among others. Their work is part of the Permanent Collection of Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma, WA).

Meier curated Creative Resilience: Critical Mass 2025 Top 50 at Blue Sky (2026), Size Matters for Medium Photo (2023), and co-curated re:collection at the Museum of Contemporary Photography (2017). In 2025, Meier started UNFOLD, a diy gallery in their SE Portland apartment where they curate exhibitions and host artist salons. Professional roles include Collections Manager at the Museum of Contemporary Photography (2018-2020), Studio Assistant to artist Barbara Kasten (2019-2020), and Exhibitions Director at Blue Sky, Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts (2021 - present).

TODAY AT NOON, the first of this year’s Lunchtime Photography Talk Series with Nykelle DeVivo. Please join us today at 12pm in the 4th floor Trustee Room of the Portland Art Museum’s Mark Building for Nykelle’s talk and presentation of their project A Flash of Spirit.

“I use light as a ritual technology for spiritual intervention and ancestral protection. In this presentation, I’ll trace the evolution of my artistic practice and pay homage to those who guided me forward. From the potentiality in Sun Ra’s astral travels to the void work of decolonial struggles, I’ll discuss the power of light in all its forms.”

Nykelle DeVivo (they/them) is a Portland-based artist whose practice centers on light as a tool for ancestral connection and spiritual revelation. Through photography, film, and installation, they engage in a meditative dialogue with the unseen, drawing from diasporic traditions of divination, Afrofuturist methodologies, and Black Anarchist praxis. DeVivo holds an MFA in Visual Arts from the University of California San Diego and is an inaugural Google Image Equity Fellow. Their work has been presented internationally and is included in numerous public and private collections. They are currently preparing their first monograph, Tha Crossroads, a culmination of over a decade of image-making, slated for release in 2027.
