Jumping back in on the last day of the ! I couldn’t post this without sharing the entirety of Psalm 146. If you don’t know Him, let me introduce you to to the God who is faithful forever: “Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. Lettering challenge with Signs and Wonders by Patti and Heart of the Artisan. Matthew 17:20 “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

There’s nothing like God’s handiwork of the Columbia River Gorge and a local art festival to inspire some creativity and I’ve had both recently to get me out of my painting slump! Credit to and her beautiful artwork displayed at the Troutdale Arts Festival for the courage to sit down and try to capture this view I often take in. I can’t believe I get to live here!

With the treat of a completely open afternoon, when I saw that was signing her new book down , I jumped at the chance! I literally couldn’t stop smiling as I got to relive some of the roots of my art journey as Peggy taught the group of us who had gathered to line draw a flower bookmark! She was the one who, several years ago now at one of her first workshops, unlocked my brain to enable me to draw a flower from what I saw. It was a Gerbera Daisy and I still remember the fear of failure and the pride of succeeding. It was one of those turning point moments and I’ll always be grateful for her teaching skills and her sweet approachable nature. She’s gone on to write quite a variety of lettering and line drawing books (most of which I own😆) so this new one,specifically with elements of our own PNW, just needed to be in my collection! Of course, I brought my bookmark home and watercolored it! Thanks, Peggy, for the fun afternoon, for remembering me🤯, and especially for your huge contribution to my art journey! 😘.

I saw a beautiful tree painting posted online the other day (not credited) and I thought to myself, “I wonder if I could do something like that?” Answered my own question today with this! 16”x20” watercolor on canvas. Not bad for not knowing what I was doing!🤣

Getting into the Christmas spirit, inspired by ‘s recent gorgeous wreath! I have to admit I panicked a little when my baby granddaughter woke up from her nap right in the middle of painting wet on wet, but I managed to wrangle her AND the Pack ‘n Play before the paper dried out😅.

Story time! I recently got to spend a few precious days at the Jersey shore with some of my besties who live all over the country. To get there at close to the same time, my trip included a red eye and three different flights. As I was waiting for the first leg in Portland, an announcement was made that my flight was delayed. Concerned, I went up to the airline desk to ask if I would still make my first connection in Seattle. The agent looked at his computer and told me “Mmmm, probably not.”😰 In my head, I could see my entire trip in shambles since the domino effect would certainly cause me to miss my flight in Chicago also. I tried to hide my panic as I started to inquire about any solution when the agent said, “Oh wait, are you Starla Brown?” When I heard him say my name, a flicker of hope flashed through my mind. I told him I was and he said, “Oh! We booked you on a non-stop direct to Chicago. It leaves in a couple hours,” effectively removing one leg of my trip and getting me there in plenty of time to make my last leg to Philly. It was better than I ever could have hoped! 🙌🏻 As I thought about that moment later, in the wee hours of the morning, it struck me that this is a perfect picture of what God does for us. 😭 We come to Him with our mess of sin and brokenness and wonder how this could ever work- how could we ever be accepted by One so good and holy? But then He calls us by name and makes a way because of His great sacrifice on the cross! All we have to do is accept this incredible gift and we are His! It’s better than we could have ever hoped!

I’ve been in the book of Amos in my Bible read-through the past few days and this verse caught my eye. What was striking to me was that when God first tells the people of Israel to “seek Me and live” in verse 4, He immediately tells them where not to go - and it’s basically anywhere else - because all those places are going to be destroyed. What a picture of what is currently happening in the world - seeking after all the things when LIFE is found in the Lord alone. Oh friends, seek Him and live!♥️
