Whew! It is sooo hard to stay on track with my own artwork. Being a teacher especially takes so much mental and physical and emotional effort. I'm left with absolutely nothing at the end of the day. The photo above right is a self-portrait I made with the pointillism technique when I was in college. So, not really mixed media, I guess. But I've been thinking about this drawing lately. I used a pencil sketch underneath and then we were given the constraint of only using red, yellow, and blue markers. I remember during the sketch phase, I kept drawing my nose too big....

Pictures 1-4 show how I often start with a photograph I took. I will tape it into my sketchbook and start making sketches. My preliminary sketches are not shown here, but you can see where I have only used the photograph as inspiration for the layout and some of the shapes and ideas, not necessarily a complete representation. Then, if am using a bigger canvas, like I do with this painting, I sometimes use a graph to enlarge the details onto the canvas in light pencil or charcoal before painting and adding collage materials....

I wrote this prose poem in a poetry grad class at PSU. Mixed media work above (completed Spring 2021) inspired by the same desk. The Same Desk This is not the same place really, but the same desk. The mixed media work here is inspired by the MACEY GARD BAND. Check them out if you are ever in the Portland area! Yes, I'm biased, since my husband is the drummer. But they are still that good!
