CastIron Carousel Marionette Troupe, Inc.

CastIron Carousel Marionette Troupe, Inc. "We bring wood things to life" In 1998 I attended the birthday party of a friend's boyfriend. It was decorated everywhere with rusty trinkets and old dolls.

I didn't really know anyone at the party, except my Friend, Sue; and the house I came to was kinda strange. Small animal bones and sixties rock posters. There were children's toys from the nineteen fifties and a lot of candles, handmade and melted down to stubs stuck to the fireplace mantle and occasional tables around the living and dining rooms. It was a small place, and apartment in Berkeley Ca

on the second floor. The carpet had been scavenged from an old theater by the landlord and it was an insane tangle of curling vine patterns with red flowers. What made the party something special was the fact that someone had loaned the host a video camera. We were all poor artists from poor backgrounds. I had never even used a video camera before then. It was agreed that the opportunity shouldn't be wasted to do something with the thing. We set up the coffee table, which was an old gray crate, as a stage and began collecting objects from around the house to tell a story with. I tied strings to a teddy bear that was wearing a kilt. A pair of bic pens became the control and I instantly had a character with a high squeaky, accented voice. Other people at the party made more characters and we put on a show for the video camera. Totally off the top of our heads with no idea where we were going with it and had a blast. The birthday boy was Dave Huckins and the rock posters were his. He had done posters for Phil Lesh, David Grisman, Widespread Panic and Stringcheese Incident. He was also a puppeteer with his friend Adam Bolivar back in Boston. They had a troupe together with Sue Kenney (Now Newman), called, "The Scratch Bros. Presto-Digital Phantasmagoria!" Dave invited me into the troupe for a play called "The Mermaid." More than a decade later, I cannot shake my addiction to puppets and marionettes in particular. In my travels, I organized several small troupes with friends and artists. "Twisted Things" & "Skin & Bones", to name a couple. I started The CastIron Carousel Marionette Troupe with Adam Bolivar in the winter of 2003 in the basement of a shared house in SW Portland. Our first show was "The Madness at Moorgate Prison," a comedy about a warden and a chaplain of a prison sacrificing prisoners in the service of an ancient demon in order to extend their eternal lives. That play set the tone for what was to come. A long serious of strange, beautiful, gory and unsettling puppet plays for grown-ups.

One very important character in NOTAMAN is the antagonistic robot, D-903, which ANDi (our protagonist) comes into conflict with near the midpoint of the story.

This robot comes from the same series as ANDi but is significantly more corrupted by errors and conflicts, making D-903 a destructive and terrifying force. Worse, D-903 has cannibalized other robots in an effort to repair himself.

He now comes for ANDi

So I NEEDED a mill for a project but have no money. I had to use only materials I already had on hand.

1 - Makita trim router
10’ x 1” x 1/8” angle iron
1 - Harbor Freight cross-slide vice
1 - 20” piece of aluminum jig track
4 - 1/4-20 clamping k***s

It’ll do I think. 😆

I needed a respite to work on a personal project for a few days so I played hookie.

This is ANDi, a robot character I’ve been writing a story about since 2005. I put him aside for a long time while I did other things but he’s back and I’m excited to bring his story out into the light finally.

I will definitely be building a marionette of this character and probably a whole show, or possibly a film. It’s gonna be a lot of work but I have reason to focus on it now.

I’ll be posting more on this going forward as I shift most of my energy to small-scale marionette film projects like this one.

A very quick series of drawings about how I attach a shoulder on my marionettes. (This is for puppets wearing a shirt—nude puppets get a different shoulder joint)

I leave just a bit of room between the parts for mobility.

I’ve been working on a template system to help me use a router to cut out marionette parts for my kits. After three iterations I’m pretty happy with this final design.

It allows me to use spaced inserts to hold pieces of basswood, of different dimensions, in to correct orientation for the router to cut away the excess. A bungee clamp holds different lengths of basswood tight. I can rapidly change wood and inserts. I even have a vacuum port to suck away the chips!

Anyway, there’s still one kit left in my shop for whomever wants to buy it.

Have you ever wanted to carve your own Marionette?

I have been working on a marionette kit for a while, and now I need Beta-testers.

It comes with everything you need, so you won’t need any power tools.

The kit is pre-sawn into general parts ready for you to customize and carve!

It even comes with a carving knife by my favorite maker, Warren Cutlery.

This kit includes:
All wooden parts, rough-cut & ready-to-carve.
All the machined brass I use in my own puppets.
All the hardware, cord, thread, & drill bits you’ll need.
A Warren Cutlery handle & blade (My favorite knife).
Complete printed instructions & video tutorials links.

Now, this kit is a prototype, so there will be some things it doesn’t have—which will be in the final kit—like nice packaging, and the instructions may have errors.

I will be asking for your feedback as you build the kit—so these kits will only be available to those willing to give me some constructive criticism.

Because this is a beta-test, I will be selling the kit for $105-off the final price! Just $245!

I will also limit the supply to 15 kits, which are first-come, first-served.

This will be a pre-sale, kits will ship out by April 15th and arrive a few days later. Shipping is free within the contiguous United States.

I’m doing this for two reasons:
- I had a client suddenly back out of a project and now I’m scrambling to pay rent!
- I really want to offer this kit later this year and I need to have a test-audience!

I have just a few days to try and make up rent so I need sell these kits in a hurry, but I will be putting the utmost effort and care into making a rewarding carving experience you will enjoy and learn from.

I hope I will also learn a lot from you about what works and what, possibility doesn’t, with these kits!

Thank you SO much for considering helping me out!
