Hiya readers. This is Shannon, Ragtag’s founder & Editor-in-Chief.

First off, we want to thank everyone for the support of the work we’ve conjured up in the last two years- it’s been an an absolute honor to facilitate a creative space for so many amazing, unique, and talented folks… which is why this post is hard to write.

The truth of it is that we were started in the pandemic as a way to connect and uplift creative people during one of the weirdest eras in recent history. Those of us who started it had a lot of time on our hands for it for tons of reasons: we attended school remotely, we lost our jobs, etc- or we simply needed an outlet that made us feel connected in a disconnected time.

Two years later, the landscape Ragtag now exists in is far different. We’re working again. We’re turning our attention toward other projects. Or we’re simply burnt the hell out (heyo) and need to focus on our own recovery in a tumultuous time. Cheryl, Miranda and I sat down and had a frank conversation about the team’s capacity to keep this going, and we were honest with ourselves in that none of us have the spoons to continue forward, as much as we love this project. Thus, the decision was ultimately made to hit the pause button on Ragtag indefinitely.

Ragtag’s Instagram will remain up so the work created can stay visible. And we are still so stinkin’ proud of each other and adore one another’s work- there’s no animosity here, only joy and admiration.

On a personal note, the gratitude I feel for two years of Ragtag is beyond words. I’m grateful to have learned and grown with so many talented people. I’m grateful for lessons learned in managing a behemoth of a project like this. And most importantly I’m grateful to have made so many cool connections. I know these feelings are shared by others on the team. And hey, if it ever makes sense to return to Ragtag one day, you'll see us around again.

Once again, THANK YOU for two years of support. If you've liked what we've made, please consider following the individuals that have helped make Ragtag happen. They deserve the support, and I promise you won't be disappointed ;)

With lots of love, over and out, etc etc,
Shan

Out of the City with a few Myths

" I would say close your eyes and imagine… but I need you to read the following story, so just do your best with your eyes open."

Swipe through to read a meditative tale that weaves local myths and legends with a walk in pacific northwest nature accompanied by beautiful illustrations.

There are many legends that have been told as long as there have been people in the Pacific Northwest. There are myths from the Puyallup, Klickitat, Cowlitz, and Yakima tribes of brotherhood, beauty, wishes, and warnings. The Yakima legend includes the Bridge of the Gods on the Columbia which joins the two sides of the roaring river. The looming Bridge also falls in line with Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainer, better known in the legend as a history of battling brothers and strong maidens emboldened by the great spirits.

Golden Hour PNW Scavenger Hunt

The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the most scenic locations, only made better by the glow of summer sunsets. From enjoying a craft beer on city rooftops to swimming in the Pacific Ocean, here are some great ways to soak up these last few weeks of golden hour sunshine,

Locust Beach (Bellingham, WA)

Just outside downtown Bellingham, Locust Beach is a local gem. At high tide, the shallow ocean water is surprisingly warm, even in the early months of spring. At low tide, the wet sands are so reflective that the ground mirrors the sky.

7 Seas Brewery (Tacoma, WA)

Resting upon a warehouse rooftop, 7 Seas Brewery and Taproom overlooks the city of Tacoma and Puget Sound. Enjoy craft beer, cocktails, and food service in the glow of golden hour.

Umpqua Hot Springs (Idleyld Park, Oregon)

A short hike from the trailhead, these geothermal pools are a great location to spend a relaxed evening with friends. The springs are lovely any day, but especially so on the somewhat chillier days of summer and fall.

Attend a concert at The Gorge (Quincy, WA)

As one of the world’s most scenic outdoor concert venues, the Gorge Amphitheatre has hosted performers big and small since 1986. Nothing compares to watching the sun dip behind the Columbia River–offering relief from the heat of the Washington desert–while listening to live music.

Coastal beaches

The Olympic Peninsula is home to hundreds of miles of coastal beaches like Ruby Beach and Cape Kiwanda.

Enjoy the roof deck at Revolution Hall (Portland, Oregon)

Revolution Hall, a music venue in Portland, is also home to a scenic roof deck (open April through October). Enjoy a drink with friends at golden hour, watching the sun go down over beautiful downtown Portland, before attending a show or a night on the town.

LEO SEASON
(July 23 - August 22)
Traditional Symbol: The Lion
PNW SYMBOL: Red Fox

Ruling Planet: Sun
Ruling House: Fifth House of Romance and Self-Expression
Key Traits: Charismatic, generous, optimistic, dramatic

You’re a Leo: bold, charismatic, and always the center of attention, you crave thrill and seek excitement. Whether at school, the workplace, or even in the bedroom with your lover, a Leo’s vibrant energy, self-confidence, and positive, cheerful attitude is just like the sun that rules this sign.

Taking action in life is a Leo’s most natural instinct, and this is why at Ragtag Magazine, we’ve represented Leo as a red fox. Swift, cunning, and full of energy, the fox darts about with a purpose and drive. Leos are very much the same, and their positive demeanors attract a number of people who rely on their cheerful energy.

Leos this year should continue shining as brightly as they can, though they mustn’t exhaust themselves. During moments that require consideration, Leos should slow down a bit, practice self-restraint, and consider all options available to them. At work, this could mean deciding how to best work with a colleague. At school, this could mean deciding which schools to apply to in the future for college. And in a relationship, this can mean deciding on something essential, such as buying a new home, deciding on having kids, or even proposing.

Regardless of what a Leo does, they’ll be sure to always do it with grander and charm.

Keep shining, Leos!
