Friends in PT, my show at will be on view April 4 & 5th, 5:30-8:30, at 57th street between Hill and Jackman. I’ve been experimenting with editions of these light boxes that indulge my love of trees, tangled layers, and shadows. Would love to see you there!

New Class Announcement….
This is a work in progress that was made through a combination of digital drawing, hand-painting, and digital cutting (gasp!). If you’ve been interested in expanding your making into a digital realm, I’m very ready to talk shop about it. Teaching a class in February about the ways a tool like procreate can be integrated into your studio practice. Link in bio and in stories.

Also, very curious to know if there are particular aspects of digital making that you think would be good to unpack in this class.

Workshop Description:

This is a course to help you recommit to your art and conquer project overwhelm. Teaching artist Michelle Hagewood has designed the workshop to help participants find clarity and follow-through, with techniques for focus, accountability, and plot-able steps towards your goals. Whether you’re a seasoned maker or you are just getting started in exploring your creative voice, the strategies are universal. We will welcome a diverse group of folks with varying access to time, space, and resources, and foster a supportive environment for finding what you personally need.

As a multi-disciplinary artist who faces overwhelm on a continual basis, Michelle Hagewood shares strategies that have helped her produce large solo shows, self-published books, short films, and simple daily practices.

Your goals might include (but not be limited to): creating a new body of work, a new creative business, an installation, a film, or a book. Or maybe your goal is just making it into the metaphorical or actual studio. We will start with the four-week timeline, and offer extension options if desired.

Playing with light, layers, and forests of the mind.
Also working on some plans for what simplified editions could be of these…

Am squeezing in studio time these days amidst a pretty satisfying full time gig, parenting, mourning what’s lost and celebrating what’s still here.

I find I go numb, and have to pull out at least five tricks in order to find my way back to the part of me that imagines new worlds.

In 2025, I’m pouring energy into workshopping world-building and creative-life building. Two different courses - one through and the other thru .

Build a world, a creative practice (also you need one to have the other). What are you struggling with on either of these fronts and how can we figure it out together? I would genuinely like to know.

Throwback to something like 15 years ago in the highlight of grad school and my Creative Alliance residency. Within these structures, even with a full-time job, (and the benefit of youth!) I was able to produce large bodies of work for solo shows. This is where I first learned foundational skills for making work amidst the throws of life.

Now a parent, with a day job, and in very uncertain and disturbing times…I need my studio work more than ever and must hone and flex these skills every day I can.

This is all a plug for a workshop series I’m leading in January that is about helping you find your focus and plan for your big ideas or your need to carve out a creative practice.

I’m so excited to create space for this and to share the library of tricks and tools I’ve amassed over my two decades of juggling art and life. Check out “Talking Big Ideas: Honing Your Art-Making Practice” at Northwindart.org (will link in my bio).

And let me know if you have particular questions or hopes/dreams about what your creative life looks like in 2025. We’re gonna need everyone’s creative energy.

Peek at a . Also, there are still a few spots in my “cutting through” class at ! We may not have time to go this crazy in that class but we will explore the foundations for doing so! Thinking about layers, and what’s behind the things that sit on the surface.

Also if you have favorite papercut artists or folks who make layered works of art, shout them out in the comments so i can share with the class!

Looking for a few more folks for the upcoming “Cutting Through” workshop on making tunnel books/reliefs/shadow boxes. There’s a lot of fun to be had with this form- whether it’s world-building or making a holiday themed moment for your home.

We’ll be exploring and experimenting with layering, cutting, and arranging forms in 2.5 dimensional space. Link in bio to sign up for the one-day workshop at Northwind!

Pulled out the acrylic inks this week to get ready for a special workshop today, sharing the way I play with fluid acrylics and inks on non-porous as well as porous surfaces. Has me remembering all the things I love about this work - primarily the way it’s a kind of dance with the unpredictability of water and and pigment, and the ways that layers upon layers work together to eventually make something.

If you’re interested in staying tuned on upcoming workshops, sign up for my newsletter and also drop me a note about anything you’d particularly be interested in learning about.

At a time like this, art is helping me work through the anxieties and feelings of helplessness in the face of the unimaginable natural disasters and violence happening in the world. Am thinking about how to open up space and do this in community as well.

On that note, I am working through various approaches to thinking about shadow boxes, light boxes, and tunnel books in preparation for the upcoming class on Oct 26 at Northwind. There is still space left and I’m happy to answer any questions you might have about it!

Will put a link in my bio and in stories - and will post again soon about another class, “Thinking Through Drawing” that is near and dear to me, coming in November.

Using a variety of up-cycled papers and materials, we will create tunnel book vignettes that play with color, space, and the meditative qualities of carving out shapes. We will explore the basics of using Exact-o knives, composition, and tricks of perspective to create immersive worlds within a 5” x 7” space.

Whether you’re interested in creating a fantastical wonderland or an abstract collage of elements, we’ll look at examples of how artists use foundational art elements in a 2.5 dimensional space and play with what is seen or implied in “tunnel vision.” We will also touch on how these elements can be translated into larger formats or even within digital/animation contexts.
