2200 words written, now coffee. I was up past 1am in the morning immersing myself in the story to see where the romance was headed. Now my head is pounding with dialog and story arcs to get down. Looks like my cowboy might be finding a bit more than a soul mate in the big bad city. He just might have two guys falling for him at the same time.

I'm looking out my window. The sun is striking the fountain as a gentle breeze blows the water into a misty veil the skitters across the lake surface. Palms are swaying and white illuminated clouds layer on top of a robin's egg blue sky. Taking a photo wouldn't work. What I want is a camera that take a photo of how I sensually and emotionally experience the view, not simply what is present. Now that would be an incredible piece of technology.

After glow is more intimate to me than s*x itself. S*x is about losing yourself in endorphins. After glow is about losing yourself in another body and mind. The person has seen you as naked as you get, and yet they still hold you in their arms blemishes and all without the s*x games and s*x talk. Two people seeing each other in every way, knowing each other in every way.

Feeling down in the dumps. Nothing makes me feel more worthless than looking for a job in this economy with a Masters in Library Science. I.E. there are no jobs. And I'm over qualified for what is out there so I don't get interviewed.

Of course I've read Harlequin romances. I confess. But the problem with them is that the characters are Photoshop stereotypes I cannot relate to. Who can? They are too synthesized and boiled down so all the gritty real life aspects are taken away and color coated for window dressings. Real romances should involve people you bump into on the street or who could be you. That makes a romance an escape fantasy worth spending time reading.

Taking a short break between my last finished book, House Call, and my current work in process has allowed me to think long and hard about what I want from my new piece. I knew starting in that I wanted to have my first pure gay romance story. In Take Bi Love, two of the central male characters had their love realized but the theme running through the story focused more on bis*xual people. Not this one. Working title After Glow is new for me. There is only one love story and it is pure homos*xual from the get go. But that isn't the only difference. To date, all my books are R or X rated and the s*xual energy is active right at the beginning of each book. After Glow is taking a different path. I'm already at seven thousand words and innuendos haven't even been dropped. This is much more a traditional romance story of two people finding each other and falling in love. S*x will come in, sure, but it isn't an erotic tale first and a romance tale second. After Glow is going to reverse that. Taking place in New York City, it is about a man moving from Kansas to city life in hopes of finding a man to share his life with. Nothing more. Love is the driving force and everything else window dressing. The one thing I am trying very hard to do is make these characters feel so real and modern that you could be sure to see them on the street if you just looked hard enough. More importantly, these characters are all of us, real, full bodied, full emotions, modern people working and living in the same world as the reader.

Funny but sadly true for my birthday: So I was born abroad on Vancouver Island, British Colombia, Canada to American parents. I just looked at the Amazon website for Canada. None of my books are listed. Evidently it is illegal for my work to sell there due to decency laws. How sad. My birthplace thinks my work is too hot to be readable. I guess I could take this as a compliment?

I have always remembered in my literature class in grad school when my textbook broke down and admitted something few academics and reviewers want to admit. What makes a good book? The reader liking it. No amount of education, skilled dissection, artistic lingo, or marketing can take away from the fact that it is up to every reader to determine if a book is good. When it comes down to it, that is what reviewers do to. There is no secret formula.

You are watching a TV show or movie and one character stares at another. You feel it deep inside stirring up warmth and wishful cravings. You want to be looked at just like that. I got that feeling in the show Fringe watching Peter Bishop gaze at Olivia Dunham. I wanted that for myself. A look like that said eternal love, warmth, security, safety, protection, not being alone in the world. I can't get that look out of my head. But I think I've always been fascinated by such a human need for coming under another's wing. It is the same theme that runs through Sanya's Nights and slightly altered through Scheherezade's Gift, two of my earlier books.
