Earlier this week, we found ourselves writing a grant proposal that left us thinking a lot about two phrases that have quietly become part of our language at The Process: "Make a mess" and "the messy middle".

I used to think *make a mess* was about paint on the tables, clay on the floor, glitter that somehow follows you home, and projects that leave your hands a little dirtier than when you started. I mean... it is. But it also means so much more.

It means to make a mess of self-doubt. To make a mess of fear. To make a mess of old assumptions, perfection, and expectations. To make a mess of the idea that you have to earn permission to belong.

The mess has never been the point. The courage to make it has.
And that brings me to the messy middle.

We celebrate beginnings because they're exciting. We celebrate endings because they make a good story. But when do we get to celebrate the delicious middle?

The part where the excitement has worn off. Where things don't look the way you imagined. Where you're questioning yourself. Where you're learning, adapting, rebuilding, grieving, growing, and creating... all at the same time.

The middle can be uncomfortable. It's also where almost all growth happens.

I think that's why we're called The Process. Not because we care more about unfinished things than finished ones, but because we believe the journey deserves just as much care as the destination.

So maybe that's what we've been trying to say all along.

Make a mess is the invitation.
The messy middle is the promise.

A promise that you don't have to have it all figured out to belong here. You don't have to be finished to be worthy. Sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can do is simply keep creating while we're still becoming.

Here's a peek at our very first scholarship participants enjoying The Process Foundation through our partnership with local disability organizations—a milestone made possible by the Community Foundation of St. Clair County and its Equity & Inclusion Committee.

(You'll notice we've covered their faces. We love celebrating our friends while also respecting their privacy.)

Because of this grant, cost is no longer a barrier for many individuals and families. It means more people can experience the joy of creating, exploring, connecting, and simply being themselves in a space designed to welcome everyone.

To our community: thank you for believing in our mission and supporting us as we became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Every donation, every word of encouragement, and every person who walked through our doors helped make moments like this possible.

And to the Community Foundation of St. Clair County and its Equity & Inclusion Committee: thank you for investing in accessibility, creativity, and belonging. Your support is already changing lives, and this is only the beginning.

We just wrapped up a very bittersweet weekend... Story time.

For a long time, we've dreamt of a place where people could have a safe place to explore art, just as they are. Really dig into the delicious part of learning. That middle part, you know? The space between the spark of an idea and a finished product.

The Process.

This weekend, we packed up the last of our things and said goodbye to our little space in Birchwood Mall.
Looking back, it feels less like an ending and more like the closing of our first chapter.

Those walls gave us a place to dream out loud. It gave us room to experiment, to stumble, to grow, and to discover who we were becoming. It gave us the privilege of holding space for children, adults, families, artists, and individuals with varying abilities to explore, create, connect, and simply be themselves.

We thought we were opening an art & science center. Together, we built a community.

None of this would have been possible without the people who trusted us enough to walk through our doors. To every participant, volunteer, family, supporter, community partner, neighboring business, friend, mall staff, and curious passerby who dared to ask, “what is this place?” - thank you. You inspired us, challenged us, celebrated with us, and, more times than you probably realize, humbled us. You didn't just support The Process. You helped build it with us.

For our first chapter, and for every person who became part of it, we are eternally grateful. It feels fitting that this move comes alongside another incredible transition. The mall gave us a place to grow. Our new home gives us room to continue that mission.

The Process has officially transitioned into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization: The Process Foundation.
With the help of many friends and family, we've found a new home in the Harrison Building in Port Huron.

While our address has changed, our mission hasn't. If anything, it's only grown.

Here's to the next chapter.
