There’s an incredible buzz of excitement at Clay Art Center as we get ready for tomorrow’s Hand in Hand Benefit and Auction! Our board, staff, volunteers, artists, and community are putting the finishing touches on preparations to welcome you to this special in-person event.

It takes many dedicated hands to make Hand in Hand a highlight of our programming each year, and we’re deeply grateful to everyone who generously shares their time, talent, and energy to make it all possible.

The gorgeous flowers pictured here were generously donated by one of our artists, freshly gathered from their own garden! Tomorrow, you’ll find them brightening the artist-donated vases available for purchase—a beautiful keepsake to take home and enjoy. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

-Clay Expressions: In partnership with Cancer Support Community Greater NY & CT at Gilda’s Club, these free classes offer creative expression, connection, and joy for people affected by cancer and their loved ones. Due to growing demand, the program has expanded!

-Around the World in Clay: Since 2011, this free after school program has grown to serve Port Chester students in grades 2–12, opening doors to creativity through clay.

In just two days, we’ll come together to celebrate clay and community at our Hand in Hand Benefit and Auction! Join us outdoors at Clay Art Center on Saturday, October 17, from 4:00–6:00 PM for an afternoon of music, delicious food, and, best of all, wonderful company.

This year, we’re honored to recognize the Common Sense Fund for its unwavering support of Clay Art Center. Their generosity has helped make so much possible, from staff expansion through capacity-building grants and support for the construction of our ADA-accessible Yellow Studio to internships and camp assistantships that give local students opportunities to build their resumes and grow professionally—and so much more.

Our program will feature remarks from our honorees, Artists-in-Residence, Executive Director, Community Arts Manager, and other special guests. You’ll also have the chance to browse and bid in our live auction, all while enjoying the warmth and creativity of a community united by a shared love of clay.

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Congratulations to Melodie Reay, whose work, Peacock Mug, was selected as the winner in the People’s Choice Vote at Clay Art Center! Thank you to everyone who participated in the voting both in person at the gallery, and online. There’s still time to see Handled With Care before it closes on October 17. Make sure you don’t miss it!

Melodie Reay is an artist and educator based in Los Angeles and Vancouver. She holds an MFA from Louisiana State University and a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal. She states, “I am compelled by the indexical nature of clay—its ability to register experience, not unlike a photograph. The word understand, in Old English translates simply as: to stand under, or among; while in Greek: to stand upon or before—both etymologies imply that understanding is experienced through the body. In a world of waning physical contact, I press clay onto the people, places and things around me. I press clay onto my life as a way to be present in it. While my work in clay takes many forms, making useful objects is an integral part of my art practice that allows me to observe my surroundings, process my experiences and work through ideas in a more direct and playful way. Making and using pots is a deeply human endeavor, affording the opportunity for connection to both the current user as well as a long history of ceramic tradition.”
