Over here, we’re deeply saddened by the loss of Joe Ely, a singular American singer, great musician and great artist. I was lucky enough to count Joe as a true friend and I will miss that voice and his companionship. Our hearts go out to his wonderful wife Sharon and the family. We’ve lost an American classic.

Joe Ely was one of those artists I always dreamed of having at Third Coast Theater, but could never quite afford to make happen. And yet, when our town needed music and generosity the most, he showed up anyway.

After Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Joe—along with Terri Hendrix, Lloyd Maines, Terry Allen, and others—worked with the Port Aransas Museum to plan a benefit concert at Third Coast in January of 2018. The night was called “Harvey Is History.” I can’t even remember how much money they raised for this town, only that it mattered.

As only my luck would have it, I was down with what I think was the flu and couldn’t attend that incredible night. I’ve always regretted missing it. But looking back now, the lyric that keeps ringing in my head feels like the perfect reminder of who Joe was:

“The best people in life are free.” -TS

Thank you, Joe Ely—for the songs, for some of the most fun memories seeing you at LJT Fest, and for your generosity when our town needed it most.

We wanted to share some important news about Third Coast Theater.

As many of you know, the Third Coast building was sold about 18 months ago. Since then, the new owners have graciously allowed us to continue hosting shows in the venue. We’re truly thankful for that opportunity. But despite our efforts, the situation has become increasingly challenging. We’ve weighed every option, but ultimately, keeping Third Coast open is no longer possible.

This is not a decision we take lightly. When Jim built Third Coast Theater in 2000, the goal was simple: to support singer-songwriters and provide a space where original music and storytelling could thrive in Port Aransas. What followed was 25 incredible years of authenticity, integrity, community, and fun.

We’re so grateful to each and every artist for taking the Third Coast stage and being such a meaningful part of our journey.

We are equally grateful to our concertgoers - whether you bought a ticket for every show you could possibly attend, or only came out to see us one time. We quite literally would not have existed without you.

We are deeply proud of what we built together—two decades of original songs, stories we'll continue to tell over and over again, live recordings, dedicated audiences, late nights, and unforgettable memories.

Django Walker is a person who truly has music in his blood. As a child, he was born and raised in Austin, TX and is the son of Texas singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker. He spent his earliest days soaking up Texas legends such as Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, and Guy Clark, all of whom Jerry Jeff played with and befriended.

Django made a name for himself penning songs for Pat Green (Texas on my Mind,) Jimmy Buffett (Something ‘Bout a Boat,) Josh Abbott, Kevin Fowler, among many others. He has had great success with his winning song “College Life” as well as “Texas Longhorn” which plays at every home game at DKR Longhorn Stadium.

Today Django still carries that torch representing music in the Lone Star State and touring all over the country…and it burns big and bright.
