In basic painting, we learn that value is important. Take a drawing class so you know your shapes are right. Then, is color with the right value. It doesn’t matter what color. Get the values right.

It’s a process:

Min asked if I wasn’t sure if this was one of our visits. I don’t know when or where I am. Time and space seem indifferent at times.
Since my mind can’t tolerate gaps, I’m forever on a scavenger hunt; finding clues of when, what, where and who. From the green, I can tell it’s spring. By the light, I can tell it’s morning. From the angle, I might be in my truck. Am I shooting with my Canon T3? IDK really.
Chasing some color, wanting the sunrise because: a) the sunset is on the back and I didn’t want to hike out in the dark. And b) on a clear day, they say that you can see DC.
I always thought that I was facing East. Getting turned around on any trail is no joke. Circle navigating the entire mountain only once because I’ve made a wrong turn. But I had nowhere to be in my nowhere way.
Where did I get this image?
I remember going up early. To the overlook. Waiting. The sky is becoming light. And where is the sun that I had expected? Ummmhmmm and around to the left. Nope. I’m not facing East, but a bit south. Or not south enough as I calculate that we are in the northern hemisphere, so the sun is always south. Enough to confuse me.
I hike down and start to drive down disappointed.
At the “Potomac Overlook “ I snap one image as I make my way to the east side. Yep. Missed the sunrise all together.
The mountian started locking its gates when Covid hit. So many people… too many people doing the wrong things got me locked out for sunrise. So, this must be from before that.
Looking through my sugarloaf files, I find it. This tonalism is exactly what I’m wanting. It’s here but not. Somehow dominant, quietly. Subtle, powerfully solid. Jagged and gnarly branches, sticks and forest. And how did that bird get up there? I just thought it should be. Float away into the mist of time and place above the tree line.
