Lads & lasses, this is beautiful & interesting. I’m sharing this post by Visit Scotland Tours. The Apprentice Pillar, Rosslyn Chapel. Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

One of the most beautiful carvings in Rosslyn Chapel is also at the centre of one of its darkest and most enduring legends.

Known as the Apprentice Pillar, this extraordinary column is covered in intricate twisting stonework. According to legend, the chapel’s master mason travelled abroad to study the design before attempting such a complicated piece of work.

While he was away, his young apprentice supposedly had a dream revealing how the pillar should be carved. He completed the masterpiece himself — but when the master mason returned and saw that his apprentice had surpassed him, jealousy turned to rage.

The story claims that the master struck the apprentice on the head with his mallet, killing him on the spot.

Whether the tale is history or legend remains uncertain, but it has become inseparable from Rosslyn Chapel and adds another layer of mystery to an already extraordinary place.

Almost six centuries later, the Apprentice Pillar remains an astonishing example of medieval craftsmanship. ❤️
