✨ NEW CLASS! Hybrid Ceramics: Hand-building & Wheel Throwing ✨

Can't decide between hand-building and wheel throwing? Why not try both!

Join us at Kasper & Clay for a 6-week introductory course exploring the fundamentals of ceramics. Students will get hands-on experience with hand-building, wheel throwing, glazing, and surface design while creating their own functional and sculptural pieces.

Whether you're brand new to clay or looking to brush up on your skills, this class is a great opportunity to experiment, get creative, and explore different techniques!

✨ Instructor Spotlight! ✨

We’re excited to welcome Mark Vander Heide as a new instructor at Kasper & Clay!

Mark grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan and is now an artist and arts educator based in Detroit. He holds a BA in Sociology and received his MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2022. He has over a decade of experience in ceramic education, working with students of all ages—from toddlers to retirees.

While primarily working in ceramics, Mark also creates work in paper, fiber, and in the kitchen. His tableware and quilting emerge from a place of play in the studio, building systems of color, pattern, and form that are then interrupted and twisted—exuberance made physical through razzle-dazzle camouflage. His sculptural and painted work explores contorted realities, merged timelines, and reflections on past longing, current fixations, and future dreams.

Mark is now accepting private lesson requests at Kasper & Clay. Lessons can be tailored to your experience level, interests, and goals, whether you’re completely new to clay or looking to build on existing skills.

Whether you’re brand new to ceramics, looking to strengthen your skills, or ready to explore new ways of working with clay, our upcoming 8-week courses offer plenty of time to learn, experiment, and make work you’re excited about.

All-Levels Wheel Throwing

Intermediate/Advanced Handbuilding

Take your handbuilding practice further this fall with Intermediate/Advanced Handbuilding taught by Tom Caycedo.

This 8-week course is designed for students with previous ceramics experience who want to strengthen their handbuilding skills, explore more advanced construction techniques, and develop more independent projects.

Students will have the opportunity to experiment with form, surface, and personal ideas while receiving individualized guidance throughout the course.

Instructor Spotlight! ✨

We’re excited to introduce Nickie Gunning (they/them)!

Nickie Gunning is an interdisciplinary q***r artist based in Metro Detroit. Their work has been exhibited nationally at venues including the Swope Art Museum, Springfield Art Museum, Cranbrook Art Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. They have participated in major exhibitions including Mighty Real/Queer Detroit and Art Southampton, as well as multiple artist residency programs.

Nickie is the recipient of several awards, including the CERF+ Get Ready Grant, the Frank Swaim Award of Honor, and the A.R.T. Award (Ambitious Risk Taker). Their work has also been featured in publications including The Washington Post, The Trans Mag, and the Lansing State Journal.

Nickie holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from the Corcoran School of Art + Design.

This fall, Nickie will be teaching Beginner Handbuilding, an 8-week course designed for students who are new to working with clay or want to build a stronger foundation in handbuilding techniques.

The class will meet Wednesdays from 6–9 PM, beginning September 23rd.

Our All-Levels Wheel Throwing class is back this fall at Kasper & Clay! 🏺

This 8-week course is open to complete beginners as well as returning potters looking to strengthen their skills, try new forms, and spend more time at the wheel.

Students will work on foundational throwing techniques, trimming, handles, glazing, and more, with individualized instruction based on their experience level.

It has been a quiet summer here at Kasper & Clay, so we are excited to announce that we will be offering a limited number of studio memberships this September!✨

Our membership is designed for experienced ceramic artists looking for a dedicated place to create. Members will enjoy 24-hour access to the studio outside of scheduled classes and studio programming, two personal shelves for storage, and use of our studio equipment and community glazes. Clay is not included, and memberships are intended for independent artists rather than high-production work.

Memberships are $125 per month.

If you’re interested in becoming a member, please email [email protected] with a brief introduction, your experience level, and 5–10 images of your work. Applications will be reviewed to ensure the membership is a good fit for both the artist and our shared studio community. We look forward to welcoming a small group of makers into the studio this fall!

All Levels Wheel Throwing starts next week at Kasper & Clay!

Whether you’re brand new to the wheel or looking to keep building your skills, this 6-week class is a great place to start. Students will learn the foundations of wheel throwing, including centering, pulling walls, trimming, and glazing, while working toward functional forms like cups, bowls, and plates.

This class is open to beginners and returning students, with room to grow at your own pace.
