We haven't posted anything lately but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy! Here's one of the latest projects. It started with a maple tree coming down in the neighborhood over a year ago. A lot of sawdust later, we have the perfect spot to enjoy our evenings together.

It's not just woodworking here, we've got a pretty talented dessert chef as well! A very special person requested a dinosaur birthday cake, and I think this one was amazing.

Getting close to done! After everything is sanded, it's time to seal these up with some high gloss poly. It is very satisfying to see how the wood comes to life again! Three or four coats and they will be done.

Lots and lots of half lap joints, a whole lot of Titebond II glue, and a whole bunch of creative clamping to turn all of those pieces and parts into 20 8"×10" and 10 5"×7" picture frames! Up next, there will be a whole lot of sanding!

Working on the reclaimed wood again. After I surfaced the boards and milled them all down to the same thickness, I cut off the tongue and made a bunch of equal width sticks. Then I turned around and turned the sticks into a bunch of equal length pieces. Any guesses as to where I'm going with this project?

My take on woodworking: It is 1) the art of taking big pieces of wood and making them smaller and then stressfully and carefully putting them back together to make something emotionally pleasing and 2) figuring out how to fix and/or hide all the times you mess up on #1!

A while ago I got some reclaimed tongue and groove pine boards from a 100+ year old building that was falling in. I've started to clean them up, we'll see what we can make with them. More to come!

The final step is sealing the flag with polyacrylic. We spray on at least three coats and hand sand in between with 220 grit. A lot of work goes into making these flags. Each one has it's own unique challenges, but everyone is fun to make!

Next step, we sand the sides of the flag to remove the tabs and clean up any cut marks. Then we get out the torch to add a distressed look to the flag. It's pretty exciting watching the fire bring out the grain of the wood. We need to do the back too, otherwise the flag will warp. The stars can be a little tricky, so the little torch comes in handy. One more step and this flag is out the door!
