"Tōgei: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics," on view at AMOCA June 13, 2026 - January 3, 2027, explores Japan’s ceramic tradition and its evolution from functional wares to modern artistic expression.

Japan’s ceramic traditions are among the most revered in the world, shaped over centuries by regional kilns, tea culture, ikebana flower arranging, devotional practices, and a profound respect for material and process. Some of the artists engage directly with functional wares such as food serving bowls, tea bowls, and flower vessels, while others challenge the very notion of utility by exploring ambitious sculptural works. This exhibition highlights technical mastery while illuminating the intellectual and cultural conversations shaping Japanese ceramics today.

This will be the first exhibition in half a century of modern and contemporary Japanese ceramics in eastern Los Angeles County, providing a rare chance for many to see the range of this unique facet within modern and contemporary ceramic art.
