🐏🌊 Fibershed + Seelie Studio: Sea to Soil Series

Join Sasha Duerr for a two-day seaweed extravaganza! Day one, we’ll head to the beach to learn about different types of kelp and forage for the wrack (seaweed washed up on shore) that will become our dye baths. Day two, we’ll gather at the Learning Center to create various dye baths from different seaweeds and modify them to produce a spectrum of colors.

For the first time, Sasha is teaching her Seaweed Color Study Workshop in person. She’ll show you how to identify seaweeds that will yield wonderful colors, build multiple dye baths, and modify them to create a Pacific palette. Coming from her lens of natural color, slow food, slow fashion, and social practice, Sasha will delve into the textile history of seaweeds and kelp and their current role as a regenerative source of color.

You’ll create fabric color swatches from seaweed dye baths, paint with saltwater colors, and leave with a large dyed textile that can be worn or displayed. Duerr will share dye recipes, resources, and additional inspiration following our workshop.

We hope you can join us for an immersive and inspiring weekend of beachcombing, gathering, and creating beautiful saltwater colors together!

Join us for a hands-on workshop where conservation meets craft. We’ll dye merino wool scarves using natural pigment from purple sea urchins found along the Sonoma Coast🌊

You’ll learn how urchin spines are harvested and processed to create vibrant natural dye, and hear from Seelie Studio founder Margaret about her journey (and many experiments) with this unusual material.

Along the way, we’ll explore the story of purple sea urchins and their role in our coastal ecosystems — and how their recent population boom has contributed to the loss of kelp forests.
You’ll leave with a Climate Beneficial Verified merino wool scarf dyed with urchin-sourced color 👩🏼‍🎨.

If you’ve spent time along the coast, you’ve probably seen them — spiky, bright-purple little creatures tucked into tide pools or scattered across rocky shores. They’re called purple sea urchins, and they’ve long been part of California’s marine ecosystems 👾🌊

A series of unfortunate shifts — warming ocean waters and the loss of natural predators — has allowed their numbers to grow quickly in some regions. Many urchins now spend their days munching on kelp, turning lush underwater forests into bare rock.

Using purple urchin spines to create natural dye pigments is one way we pay attention to these changes and support kelp recovery efforts along the coast.

What’s the difference between the Dec and Jan workshops at ?

- December, you’ll dye a wool scarf, silk pillowcase, and silk squares. You’ll use a 1/2 gallon dye bath.

- January, you’ll dye a 100% Marino wool beanie that’s Climate Beneficial Verified. You’ll use a 1 gallon dye bath.

- BOTH workshops include a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium and chance to meet live sea urchins.

- BOTH workshops are kid-friendly.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The Fibershed Learning Center is excited to offer Seelie Studio’s most in-depth urchin dye workshop to date!
For the first time, Margaret Seelie, the founder of Seelie Studio, will show you the entire urchin dye process, beginning with how we source the urchins, process their bodies, and create dye. You’ll have your own dye station where you’ll experience this unforgettable natural dye process and dye a Climate Beneficial Certified Merino Wool beanie sourced in California.
For the first time, Seelie Studio will also have live urchins in class. You’ll learn about our spikey friends with PhD student and urchin extraordinaire Maddie Armstrong.

WHY URCHIN DYE?
Sea Urchins are incredible creatures. However, due to human impact, their populations have gone unchecked, and they have consumed 95% of the kelp forests in California. In efforts to help the kelp and honor these animals, we will create a beautifully dyed beanie using urchins from various kelp restoration projects along the West Coast. Join us at the intersection of environmental responsibility and artistic expression.
