Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day, honoring the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples.

It is also an opportunity to reflect on the complexities of our shared history, acknowledge the injustices experienced by Indigenous communities, and celebrate their resilience and continued influence on the world around us.

Understanding history means recognizing all of its voices and perspectives, including those too often overlooked.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

The Galata Museo del Mare (Genoa Maritime Museum) features an extensive exhibit dedicated to Christopher Columbus and his historic voyages of exploration. Like many consequential figures in history, Columbus left a complex legacy, one that deserves to be understood in its historical context, with an appreciation for his contributions and an honest acknowledgment of the controversies surrounding them.

History is best understood when we examine it in its entirety, recognizing both its achievements and its complexities.

Wishing everyone a Happy Columbus Day.

Jenn was honored to present at Fondazione Ansaldo in Genoa, the city where the magnificent SS Andrea Doria was built, and share the ongoing work of D/V Tenacious in exploring, documenting, and preserving this historic shipwreck.

At the heart of her presentation was a message of urgency: the Andrea Doria is disappearing, and with her, irreplaceable pieces of maritime history.

Environmental conditions, commercial fishing activity, and the wreck's location and depth all contribute to her continued deterioration. These same factors make the recovery and preservation of historic artifacts so important. Salvage is not simply about bringing objects to the surface. It is about rescuing pieces of history before they are lost forever and preserving the stories of the people who built, worked aboard, and traveled on this extraordinary ship.

As a recent Italian article covering the event explains (translated from Italian):

"Jennifer Sellitti, captain of the D/V Tenacious and an active participant in shipwreck exploration and research, also emphasized the limited time remaining to document what still exists on the ocean floor.

'Sooner or later, the ocean will reclaim the Andrea Doria,' she observed.

The wreck is constantly changing, and what can still be seen today may no longer be there in the future.

For this reason, according to Sellitti, the work involves more than simply reaching the ship. Documenting and preserving artifacts means safeguarding tangible connections to the people who lived, worked, and traveled aboard the Andrea Doria.

This work proceeds in parallel with archival preservation efforts.

Underwater, the goal is to document what the sea is gradually transforming. In Genoa, meanwhile, photographs, blueprints, personal accounts, and documents created when the Andrea Doria was still one of the great achievements of Italian shipbuilding are being preserved."

Whether preserved in the archives of Genoa or recovered from the depths of the Atlantic, these pieces of history deserve to survive long after the ship herself is gone.
