“Falling Slowly” — Grafton Street, Dublin.

Two performances on the same street, years apart, brought together here.

In one, The Edge spontaneously begins a tribute to Glen Hansard with “Falling Slowly,” with U2 joining in on Grafton Street. In the other, Glen himself stops to sing the song with young busker Padraig Cahill.

Long before Once, the Oscar, and international acclaim, Glen Hansard was a Dublin busker. The song somehow belongs there — among the crowds, the passing strangers, and the street musicians who keep Dublin’s musical tradition alive.

Liam Ó Maonlaí, lead singer of Hothouse Flowers, was a longtime friend and musical collaborator of Glen Hansard. At Glen’s funeral, Liam joined the musical tributes and led the closing performance of Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young.”

Here he sings the hauntingly beautiful Amhrán na hEascainne (“The Song of the Eel”) on TG4’s Port Orkney, accompanied by a remarkable gathering of musicians from Ireland and Scotland. It’s an old murder ballad: a young man has been poisoned by an eel his wife served him. As he lies dying, he tells his family what he will leave each of them—and saves a curse for his wife.

Paddy Keenan, co-founder of The Bothy Band and one of the greatest uilleann pipers of his generation, has died.

His playing had extraordinary fire and freedom—a raw, driving force that helped make The Bothy Band one of the most influential groups in Irish traditional music.

In his memory, this is The Bothy Band performing “The Laurel Tree.”

Rest in peace, Paddy Keenan.
