It was grand to be in Aran in March when Dr. Evangelos arrived home after running a marathon! The islanders welcomed him with cheers and great affection. The very next day he joined everyone on a walk across Inismor for a fundraiser! This is the kind of community Betty Rivers encountered back in 1935 when she settled into Man of Aran Cottage full time, tightly knit but generous to newcomers.

🪨 Stone by Stone – The Walls of the Aran Islands 🌬️☘️

Across the limestone of Inis Mór, Inis Meáin, and Inis Oírr, more than 1,200 miles of dry stone walls run across the islands—built without mortar, every stone set in place by hand.

These walls were never just boundaries. They were invention. On bare rock, islanders made soil by layering seaweed and sand, then sheltered it with walls that let the wind pass but kept the earth from blowing away.

Every stone lifted from the fields had to be put somewhere. Over time, walls multiplied: dividing plots, keeping livestock, and stacking order out of necessity. Storms broke them down, hands built them up again. They remain not monuments but a living fabric—rebuilt, re-fitted, renewed with each generation.

Taken together, they form one of Europe’s densest networks of stonework. More than barriers, they are a record of resilience—where survival itself became tradition, and tradition became landscape.

I met this big fella as I hiked the road towards the west on Inis Mor back in March 2020. The world was closing down but Aran was far from the fray. The next afternoon, I met Betty Rivers for the first time.
