LOWER ELEVATION SNOW NEXT WEEKEND (10/10/26-10/11/26)? ☃️

It’s still a week out, so a lot can and will change. However, there is increasing confidence in a significant cool-down next weekend (highs back in the 30s and 40s on Sunday), along with the potential for widespread snow in the lower elevations.

We’ll keep you updated on the cool-down and potential snow as the week goes on. There are still a lot of variables in play, including how much moisture is available, how cold temperatures get, and how quickly the cool-down occurs. All of these factors will determine how much precipitation falls as snow.

For now, just know that accumulating snow is possible in the lower elevations next weekend, specifically in the Saturday night through Monday morning timeframe.

What happens when your kids want to keep the ranch in the family, but aren’t able to come home to run it?

That's the succession challenge Roundup rancher Bill Milton and his family are working through.

Milton says the answer may be finding a young person outside the family who wants to build a career in agriculture, and giving them more than a paycheck.

We talked with Milton about succession planning, the barriers facing young producers and why he believes agriculture needs to find creative ways to “make the pie bigger.”

Andrew Swanson will be presenting a webinar for MSU Extension on Rainfall Index Updates to Pasture, Range, and Forage Insurance on September 28 from Noon to 1:00 PM. Pasture, Range, and Forage (PRF) Insurance is one of the most important tools for Montana forage producers to manage their production risk. PRF uses a regional rainfall index to measure weather impacts on forage production, and the USDA recently updated the data used for estimating the rainfall index. This webinar will review the structure of PRF and discuss how the new rainfall index could impact the indemnities received and the premiums paid by Montana producers.
