🇹🇹 Trinidad and Tobago became independent 64 years ago today.

But why are Trinidad and Tobago one country in the first place?

The two islands traveled very different colonial paths before Britain joined them administratively in the 19th century. And even then, the country we know today wasn't necessarily destined to become independent on its own.

For several years, Trinidad and Tobago was part of an ambitious experiment to create a federated West Indian nation. When that project unraveled, the road to independence changed dramatically — and quickly.

So for Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence Day, we went a little further back.

Swipe through for the story of two islands, a failed Caribbean federation and the months that led to August 31, 1962. 🇹🇹

Happy Independence Day to Trinidad and Tobago and to Trinbagonians throughout South Florida and around the world.

**There is always more Caribbean history to discover.**
