🤪 Some families put the fun in dysfunctional, and that couldn't be more true for the Sycamore-Vanderhof family. Eccentric and blissfully unemployed, their unique pursuit of happiness clashes with the wealthy, rigid Kirby family when their "normal" daughter falls in love with her boss' son. From the tax-evading Grandpa Vanderhof to a fireworks enthusiast and a romance novelist, there's no shortage of antics in this family.
CAST OF CHARACTERS
THE SYCAMORE FAMILY &
HOUSEHOLD
🎓 Martin "Grandpa" Vanderhof (Male, Elderly, Lead): The beloved patriarch of the family. He is a wise, eccentric man who quit his corporate job years ago to simply enjoy life, collect stamps, and attend college graduations.
🎨 Penelope "Penny" Sycamore (Female, Mature Adult, Lead): Grandpa's daughter and mother to Alice and Essie. She is a warm, scattered woman who spends her time writing terrible plays and painting portraits simply because a typewriter was delivered to their house by accident.
🧨 Paul Sycamore (Male, Mature Adult, Supporting): Penny’s husband. He spends his days in the basement manufacturing fireworks with the help of Mr. De Pinna.
💼 Alice Sycamore (Female, Young Adult, Supporting): Penny and Paul's younger daughter. She is considered the "normal" one of the family, working a sensible Wall Street office job. She serves as the bridge between her chaotic family and the outside world.
🩰 Essie Carmichael (Female, Adult, Supporting): Alice's older sister. A pixie of a woman who spends her time aggressively trying to be a ballerina despite being completely talentless. She also makes homemade candy.
🍭 Ed Carmichael (Male, Adult, Supporting): Essie's husband. He is a cheerful man who plays the xylophone, operates a printing press in the living room, and helps peddle Essie's candy.
🧹Rheba (Female, Adult, Supporting): The bubbly, quick-witted maid of the Sycamore household.
🛠️ Donald (Male, Adult, Supporting): Rheba’s boyfriend, the chronically unemployed (but fiercely loyal) handyman who does odd jobs around the house.
🧊 Mr. De Pinna (Male, Mature Adult, Supporting): The former iceman who delivered ice to the house one day and never left. He abandoned his delivery job to help Paul in the basement and model for Penny's paintings.
THE KIRBY FAMILY & HOUSEHOLD
📈 Anthony "Tony" Kirby Jr. (Male, Mature Adult, Supporting): The dashing vice-president of his father's Wall Street firm and Alice's fiancé. He adores the Sycamores' "seize the day" lifestyle
👨💼 Mr. Anthony Kirby Sr. (Male, Mature Adult, Supporting): Tony’s father. A rigid, stressed-out corporate mogul who looks down on the Sycamores' lifestyle until he learns to appreciate their perspective
💅 Mrs. Miriam Kirby (Female, Mature Adult, Supporting): Tony's mother. A very proper, elitist woman who is horrified by the Sycamores' eccentricities and gets caught up in a hilarious dinner mix-up.
ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS & VISITORS
🩰 Boris Kolenkhov* (Male, Adult, Supporting): Essie’s loud, physically aggressive, and larger-than-life Russian ballet instructor who fled the Russian Revolution.
👩🍳 Grand Duchess Olga Katrina* (Female, Mature Adult, Featured): A former Russian royal who now works as a waitress but eventually stops by to make blintzes for the family.
🎭 Gay Wellington (Female, Adult, Featured): An overly dramatic, heavily drinking actress who gets invited over by Penny to read one of her scripts
💰 Wilbur C. Henderson (Male, Adult, Featured): An uptight IRS agent who comes to collect unpaid taxes from Grandpa, only to find himself bewildered by the family's lifestyle.
🚨 G-Men / FBI Agents (Mac, Jim, & The Man): Federal agents who raid the house under suspicion of anarchist activities due to Paul's fireworks and Ed's printed flyers
*If auditioning for Boris or Olga, please come prepared to read in a Russian accent.
Come prepared to have fun and do cold readings from the script! No monologue necessary. See you at auditions on July 27 & 28!
