Plant City Entertainment, Inc.

Plant City Entertainment, Inc. We strive to provide quality entertainment for our community! Since the fledgling group had no money, the Arts Council of Plant City was approached for help.

The community theater for the Plant City area began with the idea of one young woman, Clare Mills, who had returned to Plant City after college and began her teaching career, and had been involved in theater and dance at college. She found she missed these arts and decided it was time to see if the community would support a community theater. The first production was a variety show put together by

Mills and David Graves, Plant City High School’s choral director. Called “Let’s Hear It for Me,“ it was staged in August, 1980, outdoors in the paved area at the old Union Station Depot in downtown Plant City. The facility had not been used in many years and since the depot building was to be used for dressing rooms and a green room, it needed cleaning, so a group of theater devotees spent many hours cleaning, taking out trash and garbage and the remnants of where street people had been living. The council put up $400 as a contingency fund and the theater was at that time considered a part of the arts council. Theater in Plant City was off and running. Twenty-six years later, it has become an institution in the community and the training ground for many young people who have gone on to theater-related professions. The membership continues to grow and not only has it become financially self-supporting, a fund has been established to eventually fund a theater building of its own for the group. In November, 1994, the group incorporated under the name of Plant City Entertainment, Inc., a step that was necessary in applying for a non-profit status under the 501(C) tax rulings, a feat that was also completed a short time later.

🤪 Some families put the fun in dysfunctional, and that couldn't be more true for the Sycamore-Vanderhof family. Eccentric and blissfully unemployed, their unique pursuit of happiness clashes with the wealthy, rigid Kirby family when their "normal" daughter falls in love with her boss' son. From the tax-evading Grandpa Vanderhof to a fireworks enthusiast and a romance novelist, there's no shortage of antics in this family.

CAST OF CHARACTERS

THE SYCAMORE FAMILY &
HOUSEHOLD

🎓 Martin "Grandpa" Vanderhof (Male, Elderly, Lead): The beloved patriarch of the family. He is a wise, eccentric man who quit his corporate job years ago to simply enjoy life, collect stamps, and attend college graduations.

🎨 Penelope "Penny" Sycamore (Female, Mature Adult, Lead): Grandpa's daughter and mother to Alice and Essie. She is a warm, scattered woman who spends her time writing terrible plays and painting portraits simply because a typewriter was delivered to their house by accident.

🧨 Paul Sycamore (Male, Mature Adult, Supporting): Penny’s husband. He spends his days in the basement manufacturing fireworks with the help of Mr. De Pinna.

💼 Alice Sycamore (Female, Young Adult, Supporting): Penny and Paul's younger daughter. She is considered the "normal" one of the family, working a sensible Wall Street office job. She serves as the bridge between her chaotic family and the outside world.

🩰 Essie Carmichael (Female, Adult, Supporting): Alice's older sister. A pixie of a woman who spends her time aggressively trying to be a ballerina despite being completely talentless. She also makes homemade candy.

🍭 Ed Carmichael (Male, Adult, Supporting): Essie's husband. He is a cheerful man who plays the xylophone, operates a printing press in the living room, and helps peddle Essie's candy.

🧹Rheba (Female, Adult, Supporting): The bubbly, quick-witted maid of the Sycamore household.

🛠️ Donald (Male, Adult, Supporting): Rheba’s boyfriend, the chronically unemployed (but fiercely loyal) handyman who does odd jobs around the house.

🧊 Mr. De Pinna (Male, Mature Adult, Supporting): The former iceman who delivered ice to the house one day and never left. He abandoned his delivery job to help Paul in the basement and model for Penny's paintings.

THE KIRBY FAMILY & HOUSEHOLD

📈 Anthony "Tony" Kirby Jr. (Male, Mature Adult, Supporting): The dashing vice-president of his father's Wall Street firm and Alice's fiancé. He adores the Sycamores' "seize the day" lifestyle

👨‍💼 Mr. Anthony Kirby Sr. (Male, Mature Adult, Supporting): Tony’s father. A rigid, stressed-out corporate mogul who looks down on the Sycamores' lifestyle until he learns to appreciate their perspective

💅 Mrs. Miriam Kirby (Female, Mature Adult, Supporting): Tony's mother. A very proper, elitist woman who is horrified by the Sycamores' eccentricities and gets caught up in a hilarious dinner mix-up.

ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS & VISITORS

🩰 Boris Kolenkhov* (Male, Adult, Supporting): Essie’s loud, physically aggressive, and larger-than-life Russian ballet instructor who fled the Russian Revolution.

👩‍🍳 Grand Duchess Olga Katrina* (Female, Mature Adult, Featured): A former Russian royal who now works as a waitress but eventually stops by to make blintzes for the family.

🎭 Gay Wellington (Female, Adult, Featured): An overly dramatic, heavily drinking actress who gets invited over by Penny to read one of her scripts

💰 Wilbur C. Henderson (Male, Adult, Featured): An uptight IRS agent who comes to collect unpaid taxes from Grandpa, only to find himself bewildered by the family's lifestyle.

🚨 G-Men / FBI Agents (Mac, Jim, & The Man): Federal agents who raid the house under suspicion of anarchist activities due to Paul's fireworks and Ed's printed flyers

*If auditioning for Boris or Olga, please come prepared to read in a Russian accent.

Come prepared to have fun and do cold readings from the script! No monologue necessary. See you at auditions on July 27 & 28!

Betty is one of our loyal Plant City Entertainment, Inc. members. You will see her onstage, working as a costumer or volunteering in concessions at each show. Please remember to bring non-perishible food donations to the PCE Playhouse when you attend a show. All food collected will go to the Plant City United Food Bank

Summer is here, school is out, and one of our busiest seasons at the food bank has officially begun. We are estimating distributing 12,000 summer break kids bags.
It makes me think of a particular volunteer. One of the greatest lessons came this volunteer at the United Food Bank & Services.
Betty Roney. For years, Betty has faithfully volunteered with us and she has a special place in her heart for the Feeding our Future kids programs. Week after week she shows up with a smile, a servants, heart, and an unwavering commitment to ensure children have access to the nutrition they need.
If you ask Betty why she keeps coming back, her answer is simple: “ because every child deserves a chance to succeed.” No recognition sought. Just a deep belief that small acts of kindness can change a child’s future.
What Betty taught me is that impact isn’t always measured by grand gestures. Often it is found in consistency; that showing up and caring enough to do the work when no one is watching.
Our community is stronger because of people like Betty, people who quietly invest in the next generation. - Mary Heysek Mroczkowski is at United Food Bank.

🙌 Our front AC unit has finally been replaced! This would not have been possible without the wonderful contributions of our patrons, especially those who supported our 50/50 RallyUp fundraiser and our Halloween gala! Thank you so much to everyone for your patronage of PCE!

🎭 We need to replace three more units when funds are available, so your continued support is much appreciated. Thanks to Flo Rite AC for coming out and getting this installation done for us!
