Drawing session: 23 min.

Today, I sketched the front griffin leg. The bird portion is technically the heel, feet, and toes. So we're replacing the forearm of the lion with the heel of a bird. Otherwise, griffins would have extremely long front legs!

Drawing session - 15 min.

Today, I'm working drawing griffin (gryphon?) hind legs referencing a lion. When a lion sits, the muscles in the back bulge out when compressed which is why it looks so round. They are THICK! 😆

Total time + admin: 33 hrs.

I was NOT expecting to knock this out over the weekend, but here we are! The gel pen process is my favorite part of drawing. It took 5 hrs. which is typical once the pencil lines are in.

I've been tracking my time - admin work, sketching, researching - and this piece took 33 hrs. (and pending because I still need to deliver it and create my invoice). This one took a while because I was studying human and bird anatomy.

No AI, no shortcuts - just an artist doing what she loves. 💖

Soooooo, this is going by WAY quicker than I expected. Quicker in the sense that I'm getting into the zone faster than normal. I think it's because I'm finally drawing in gel pen instead of a tablet after seemingly months of studying anatomy, sketches, and transferring my art.

Tracing Paper Transfer + Preservation (18 min.)

I finished transferring my drawing to black paper. I'm pleasantly surprised with how it turned out! I've put the tracing paper in a protective sleeve for now. The next step is the fun part - gel pen!

Transfer drawing (20 min. - 90% done)

Gosh, it's looks like a completely different drawing style, doesn't it?

After you do the initial transfer onto tracing paper, you flip it and redraw over it. Your lines can be messy - you just need enough pressure so the graphite transfers to the surface. I'm using this chance to fix my chicken grip on my pencil. It's been about 2 months since I changed my grip, and while I use it 85% of the time when writing, I've rarely use it for drawing (which has multiple grips!).

Drawing session + black paper prep: 17 min.

Now that I've transferred my drawing onto tracing paper, I'll flip it over onto the black paper I've prepped beforehand. It's kinda hard to see where my drawing lands, so I used white gel pen to mark the ends of the picture on the tracing paper. I use a Canson artboard as my workspace and tape the black paper and tracing paper using painters tape. This tape won't damage the paper when removed.

I spent 15 min. tracing over my artwork. I got a lot farther than I thought!Progress, not perfection.

Switching back to a different commission (a different birb). This one I started as a digital sketch, and now I need to transfer it to black paper. To do this, I changed my sketch to black and white, and then printed it on reverse. I then taped tracing paper over the top.

I'll need to trace over my drawing in pencil so that it transfers correctly. Could take me a few sessions to complete.
