This work is a moment of reflection and deep pause. It’s an offering to communities who have been struggling and need more tools to get through this moment. Come, let’s gather and practice the tools together.

This is the new work I am creating.

Driver, Lender:

What a beginning! We’re so proud of our first GIDA/HaSTE production!

Thank you, Leo Kurland for trusting us with your incredible play. To our phenomenal cast Chris Hawthorn, .goodman .haynes who came and threw down with such heart, intelligence and a serious sense of play. And to our crew Jesse Clayton, and Zinnea Gruen, who, thankfully, are with us all summer.

This is what we dreamed of and you made it happen.

Thank you!

And believe it or not, we have a whole new show up next weekend!

“It’s a terrific show.” - Karl

“The play … held my attention from beginning to end. Each scene felt engaging and purposeful, inviting the audience to think more deeply about the art of acting and what it means to portray someone else’s lived experience.” - Mary

“Rather than offering easy answers, it encouraged reflection and meaningful conversation. I’m grateful that productions like this are coming to Vermont. They enrich our arts community, bring new perspectives, and create opportunities for dialogue long after the curtain falls.” - Adrianne

We opened last night!! Our first performance of our first production in our first season.

A downed transformer be damned - the show goes on. Shout out to our lighting designer Li and stage manager Paige who mixed the show in real time.

The thing about live theater is you can’t save it to look at later. Your Roku won’t do it! There’s no app for this!

Three more chances to see Driver, Lender (or A Fictionalized Biographical Prelude to Adam Driver’s Brief Stint as Shylock on Broadway)

The thing about new work is there is no preconceived notion of what it should be. It’s also the challenge!

Congratulations to GIDA - Goddard Institute of Dramatic Arts for creating an incubation space for new, brave theatrical works - and building it in Vermont to boot!

I called Patrisse Cullors after I read her memoir, When They Call You a Terrorist, and we’ve developed a friendship that has included organizing together Reform LA Jails and Measure R.

Now she’s bringing her artistry and power to tell more of her story in the form of a one woman show: Hopscotch & Other Prayers. Co-written and directed by Megan Dobkin

For anyone who is in the northeast this summer, GIDA’s whole first season is thrilling. Go see what GIDA - Goddard Institute of Dramatic Arts and Co-Founders & Artistic Directors Kristina and David Warshofsky are up to!

We dreamed big and are floored by the breadth of talent and depth of work that said yes and are joining us for our inaugural summer season.

No longer a when, we are deep in rehearsal for our first show, Driver, Lender (or, a Fictionalized Biographical Prelude to Adam Driver’s Brief Stint as Shylock on Broadway) by Leo Kurland, opening June 18th and running through the 21st. The cast is on fire.

Adam Driver, famous non-Jewish actor of stage and screen, has been cast as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice on Broadway. Tracing through Driver’s life, from his time in the Marines to his acting education at The Juilliard School, Driver, Lender explores whether an actor can truthfully and tastefully perform a role in an identity not their own. This satirical play blurs fiction and biography to delve into a controversial but potent artistic question.

Immediately following: Hopscotch & Other Prayers, a one woman show by Artist and Abolitionist Patrisse Cullors, June 27th & 28th.

No stranger to resilience,
Patrisse Cullors knows the way out of unsettling times is not only through, but WITH.
GATHER (for stories).
IMAGINE (your prayers).
PLAY (more Hopscotch).
A work in progress production.

And finally, Abe Koogler’s Deep Blue Sound, July 30th to August 8th.

On an island in the Pacific Northwest, a community gathers to address the disappearance of a local orca pod. Friendships fray, tumors grow, new love blooms, wood is chopped, poems are written. The seasons change. Will the whales return? Deep Blue Sound is a meditation on our relationship to neighbors, ourselves, and the natural world.

We are learning so much. Our production team is small but mighty, stretching the Haybarn to rekindle and move forward its theatrical potential while contributing to the growing life on The Creative Campus at Goddard

It’s gorgeous outside, we get it. This summer will be over before we know it. We invite you to step inside with us and travel to places unexpected and worthwhile.
In love and rigor,

Kristina Lear and David Warshofsky
Co-Founders and Artistic Directors

Welcome, Patrisse.

“For a long time I’ve been thinking about how social media has taken the space of personal storytelling. As many of you know, I have been on and off this thing for various reasons we all should be considering (algorithms, bots, toxicity, privacy, sacrificing our mental health so others make money) - and frankly, it’s made me miss the art of public story sharing. I also have been re-immersing myself in the history of the Black Liberation leaders who have come before us. Those who had the weight of the state on their backs. There is such a long history of Black folks fighting to make their lives better and then being criminalized for it. These people have always been icons to me, but they also were humans. Parents, partners, children of, community leaders, imperfect beings living through absurd circumstances. How did they go about their days under all the various threats against them?

It didn’t take long in between me saying these words out loud to and us finding ourselves co-writing a one person show for me to collect all these thoughts. Thankfully, Kristina Lear and GIDA saw what we saw in the idea and offered us a slot in their inaugural season June 27th & 28th (link in bio). Would love all my people who are in the area to come check it out.

I see “Hopscotch & Other Prayers” as not only my story, but also an offering of a toolkit to get through the unsettling times we are all collectively living through. It isn’t a complete list, but it’s a start. What are the tools YOU are using to stay present, in your bodies, and in the story you want written?

GATHER (for stories)
IMAGINE (your prayers)
PLAY (more hopscotch)”
