Pony Patio with Games The Berkshire Carousel is a community project that created an authentic classic wooden carousel that is both a work of art and a wonderful form of family entertainment. The carousel project was designed and financed by Jim & Jackie Shulman, former Pittsfield residents. The Berkshire Carousel is pu

rported to be New England's largest permanent art project ever, created by the talented volunteers. Hundreds of community members were builders, carvers, sanders, and painters and for nine years worked well over 200,000 hours to create 40 jumping figures representing the works of 18 Victorian Age carvers who came to America from Europe. Two chariots and a spinning tub were also created by volunteers. Artists hand painted all of the figures and 42 rounding boards and panels representing local landmarks, sponsors and flora. Another 20 paintings were added to the center panel. The carousel access and a chariot are both wheel chair friendly. The Carousel was completed in 2016 and operated is in Pittsfield, MA for three seasons. Currently plans are being developed with a Berkshire organization interested in supporting and operating the carousel long term.
