, André Derain was born, and by his 20s, he was considered something of a “wild beast” when it came to art.

Derain, along with Henri Matisse, was a leader of Fauvism, a short-lived avant-garde art movement known for its vivid colors and exuberant paint application.

A critic once described the artists as “les fauves,” which translates to “wild beasts,” because their art style had a violent energy.

While the name stuck, the movement only lasted a few years, and eventually, Derain transitioned his artwork to reflect what he learned from the Post-Impressionist and Cubist Paul Cézanne.

Derain’s “Landscape in Provence” takes influence from Cézanne with its more schematic and geometric design and restrained color palette.

Edgar Degas never exhibited this painting when he was alive.

When he died in 1917, "Portrait of a Man" was found in his studio.

What at first appears to be just a portrait becomes harder to explain the longer you look at it. On the table, there is a platter of sausage and a carved pig’s trotter. On the floor, there seems to be rib roast...or is it an artist's palette?

Is this painting set in a butcher's shop? A restaurant? Or, perhaps most likely, is it an artist in his studio? Degas often depicted the latter in many of his artworks.

Come see a painting that Degas didn't have the chance to show off himself in "French Moderns: Matisse / Renoir / Degas," opening on June 20.

“Revolutionary...almost catastrophic.”

This was the response from Berthe Morisot’s teacher when she, a young woman, declared she wanted to be an artist.

Not letting his reaction stop her, Morisot went on to become a central figure in the Impressionist circle of nineteenth-century France.

While many of her male counterparts took inspiration from Parisian cafes, concerts, and urban life, Morisot, an upper-middle-class woman, was limited in where she could go and what she could see. As a result, most of her work focused on spaces often associated with women: the home, gardens, and other places of polite bourgeois leisure.

You can see Morisot’s painting “Madame Boursier and Her Daughter” in “French Moderns,” opening at The Frick Art Museum on June 20.

Do you want to have a Parisian summer in Pittsburgh? Oui, s'il vous plaît! ✨

Starting June 20, French Moderns: Matisse / Renoir / Degas, will transport you to the city of love while you’re still in the city of steel. Come learn how the art world’s former outsiders and rebels—Degas, Renoir, Matisse, and more—rejected tradition and became today’s household favorites.
