Roberto Lugo is a Philadelphia-based artist, ceramicist, poet, activist, and educator whose work reimagines historical ceramic forms through the lens of his Puerto Rican heritage, North Philadelphia upbringing, and the visual language of hip-hop and graffiti. Combining portraiture, ornate patterning, and references to European and Asian ceramic traditions, Lugo creates works that confront poverty, inequality, racial injustice, and exclusion while expanding who and what is represented within the canon of decorative arts. His hand-painted vessels and sculptures often feature portraits of cultural icons, thinkers, and community figures—including Sojourner Truth, Dr. Cornel West, and The Notorious B.I.G.—as well as family members and the artist himself, bringing overlooked histories and lived experience into forms historically associated with prestige and power. Visit before the summer ends!

Born in Miami, Florida, Joel Gaitan is a first-generation Nicaraguan American ceramic artist. He received his associate’s degree in art education from Miami Dade College 2014. He has had solo exhibitions Louis & Lucas Lefebvre Paris, France (2025); Art Production Fund Rockefeller Center, New York, NY (2023); NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale Fort Lauderdale, FL (2023); 56 HENRY (2022), and Katia David Rosenthal Gallery Miami (2024, 2021). His works have been in group shows Jeffrey Deitch Los Angeles (2023); El Museo del Barrio New York, NY (2022). Gaitan has been featured in (2025), ELLE Decor (2025), W Magazine (2023), The Center Magazine (2023), CULTURED MAGAZINE (2022), Artnet (2022), and others. He is a resident artist Bakehouse Art Complex Miami. He is a 2024 US Latinx Art Forum feellowship recipient. In his work, Freddy Rodríguez (b.1945, Dominican Republic, d.2022, New York) fused conceptual and stylistic elements from New York School painting with Dominican history, Caribbean culture, and transnational issues. He exhibited widely, and is the subject of a forthcoming monograph by E. Carmen Ramos, which is part of the A Ver: Revisioning Art History book series published by the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center. The exhibition is up through September 12.

In April I visited Juan Hinojosa Juan at his final MFA exhibition to see his monumental collages. Thank you for the visit and all the thoughtful work, amigo!

Juan is a mixed-media artist who currently lives and works in New York. Constructed from found objects, his complex collage-drawings intimately challenge greed, obsessive consumption, and the social stratification of American culture. Hinojosa received his BFA from Parsons Fine Arts Parsons School of Design and was awarded residencies at Materials for the Arts (New York), the Vermont Studio Center and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Governors Island COVID-19 Response Residency program. His work has been featured in The New York Times, the Woodside Herald, and Open House New York. Hinojosa’s solo exhibitions include “Blonde Ambition” at Materials for the Arts (New York), “Ready for Their Stones” at the Allegra LaViola Gallery (New York), “All Mine”, Union College, Schenectady, New York and he was part of the Biennial at El Museo del Barrio (New York).

FINAL WEEK!!! has made so many gorgeous collages and prints, gracias amigo and for all the beauty.

Felipe Baeza (b.1987, Celaya, Mexico; lives and works in Brooklyn) is known for his figurative work that combines elements of printmaking, collage, painting, and other techniques. In these multilayered images, Baeza depicts bodies in various states of fragmentation, hybridity, and legibility—which the artist has called “fugitive” and “unruly”—to explore racialized, q***r, and migrant subjects who transgress the limitations of identity. Baeza’s work combines diverse media (including pigments, tissue paper, archival images, gesso, and varnish) as well as intensive aesthetic processes (including drawing, cutting, surface abrasion and absorption), manipulating materials on paper at both intimate and large scales.

Wards of Newark: Manuel Acevedo is a citywide public art exhibition featuring black-and-white photographs of Newark, taken from 1982 to 1987, by the multidisciplinary artist and Newark native Manuel Acevedo. Curated by Salamishah Tillet, Director of New Arts at Rutgers University—Newark, “Wards of Newark” is located across the five wards, West, South, Central, North, and East, and offers a new map of the city’s past vitality and current diversity.
