Located in the historic South Side, City Theatre is Pittsburgh’s home for bold new plays, commissioning and producing work by playwrights including Daniel Beaty, Jessica Dickey, Christopher Durang, Michael Hollinger, W***y Holtzman, Tarell Alvin McCraney, and Madeleine George. City Theatre mourns the loss of community leader and arts and culture champion, Nancy D. Washington, who passed away on October 12.

Nancy and her late husband, Milton, first became involved with City Theatre in the 1980s. For more than 30 years she served on and off our Board of Directors and, as part of her current term of service, she was an integral member of our Executive Committee.

In 2022, City Theatre honored her with our Robert M. Frankel Award.

Nancy brought exceptional taste and high standards to everything for which she advocated, and we were fortunate to be among the many causes she gave her heart to. She was one of a kind, and we will miss her dearly.

Nancy spent 27 years at the University of Pittsburgh. Among her roles there, she was assistant dean for minority affairs at the School of Medicine, and in 1994 she helped establish the Center for Minority Health. In addition to volunteering her time and leadership with City Theatre, she co-founded the August Wilson Center for African American Culture and served on the boards of the Eye & Ear Foundation of Pittsburgh, The Pittsburgh Foundation, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Carnegie Museums, Frick Museum and Gardens, Point Park University, and many others.

Her many honors include being named a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania and Nancy remained devoted to the Tanner G. Duckrey School, named for her father, the first African American superintendent of schools in Philadelphia.

Friends will be received on Monday, October 19, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206. The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Eye & Ear Foundation of Pittsburgh.

We extend our deepest condolences to her daughters, Linda and Lara, and all her family and friends.
