Director and Playwright: Katie Brook and Liza Birkenmeier

Katie Brook
Quantum’s incoming Artistic Director is no stranger to Pittsburgh or Quantum. Director Katie Brook earned her MFA in Directing from Carnegie Mellon University and, while living in Pittsburgh during the pandemic, directed for Quantum ("The Cherry Orchard" in 2022). New plays and devised work are her forte. In NYC her work has been seen at The Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival, Ars Nova, New Georges, and HERE Arts Center.

She’s been associated with The Builders Association, Elevator Repair Service, the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival, Prelude NYC, Boston Playwrights Theatre, Boom Arts in Portland, and StoryCorps.

About the play Brook says, “'radio island' is asking us where reality stands and how perspective—literally and figuratively—causes it to shift. It feels slippery and destabilizing at times as our characters try to understand each other and themselves.”

Liza Birkenmeier
Accomplished playwright of "radio island", Liza Birkenmeier is a longtime collaborator of Brook’s and a fellow graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with an MFA in Dramatic Writing. Birkenmeier is the author of "Dr. Ride’s American Beach House" (which Brook directed at Ars Nova) and "Grief Hotel" (Clubbed Thumb). She wrote the book for Jill Sobule’s musical "F*ck7thGrade" (City Theatre Company, Wild Project).

Together, they look forward to finally bringing radio island to the stage. “I wrote the play in isolation with the feeling of starved space,” Birkemeier said. “I’m excited to see it come to life in a way that is actually scary and encourages the audience to feel that threat of violence.”

Quantum Theatre is hiring a Director of Production.

We’re looking for an experienced, collaborative production leader to help bring Quantum’s ambitious, site-specific work to life.

This full-time position oversees the technical and producing aspects of Quantum’s environmental productions, working closely with the Artistic Director, Executive Director, designers, artists, and production teams.

Candidates should have 5+ years of experience in production management, technical direction, or a related field, along with strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.

Quantum Theatre is seeking a Director of Production to join the company as it enters an exciting new chapter.

This senior leadership position will oversee the technical and producing aspects of Quantum’s three-show season of non-traditional, environmental theatre productions. The Director of Production will work closely with the Artistic Director and Executive Director and supervise key production staff to bring ambitious artistic visions to life — from identifying production locations and coordinating artists and crews to managing production budgets, technical installations, and venue logistics.

We’re looking for an experienced, collaborative problem-solver with a strong background in theatrical production or technical direction who is excited by the challenges and possibilities of making theatre in unconventional spaces.
