Support is growing to save and properly resource Miller School located in the heart of the Historic Hill District. Miller School Stakeholders are holding a press conference tomorrow, Friday, October 16, to announce a plan of action, and the community is invited to attend.

Miller carries one of the oldest threads of education for Black children in Pittsburgh. That thread begins at Bethel AME Church, where Rev. Lewis Woodson and church leaders opened the city’s first school for Black children in the 1830s, in the church basement. As Pittsburgh built its public school system, leaders organized and pressed the city’s Board of Education to establish the school. That advocacy gave rise to Miller, which has educated Black children for generations.
Today, Miller is an African Centered Academy where students learn the history and culture of people of African descent as part of every school day. In recent times, the Board of Education's disinvestment in the school has led to less than the stellar outcomes. This spring, the Pittsburgh Public Schools Board voted to close Miller. Stakeholders are insisting that it's time for that decision to be reversed and for Miller School to be adequately resourced to produce the excellence that we need for the future of our communities, city and country.
