"Shadows We Cast II"
2019

This piece is the second part of a series called "Shadows We Cast," representing the "shadow aspects" of the self and being human. In this series, human figures with animal skulls are juxtaposed with "shadow" figures that may be viewed as symbols of personal struggle, inner selves, the pressures of beauty standards, or even divine aspects depending on the eye of the beholder.

"Virginia Opossum Skull"
2023

While I was studying Wildlife Resources Management, one of my assignments was to process and taxidermize a possum carcass. The animals provided had been killed either in collisions with cars or for being "nuisance" wildlife. Processing these animals helped students gain a better understanding of anatomy and how science specimens were made. This is a sketch of my possum's skull after it was fully cleaned.

"Giraffe and Oxpeckers"
Started 2020, finished 2024.

Acrylic painting of a Rhodesian giraffe accompanied by a pair of yellow-billed oxpecker birds.

With only around 550 individuals living in the wild today, the Rhodesian giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis thornicrofti) is found only in the Luangwa Valley of Zambia with no captive populations. It is one of nine sub-species of giraffe and is sometimes debated as being a sub-species of the Masai Giraffe. The yellow-billed oxpecker is a common companion, gleaning ticks and other pests from their fur in a symbiotic relationship.

"Tyrannosaurus rex Portrait Sketch"
2022

Few other species of dinosaur can rival the fame of Tyrannosaurus rex - colloquially known as T-rex - whose name means "king of the tyrant lizards." This theropod dinosaur roamed what is now western North America at the end of the Late Cretaceous period between 90- and 66-million years ago.

"Okapia johnstoni in Watercolor"
2021

Watercolor and ink mixed media painting of the okapi. Okapia johnstoni is the only living relative of the giraffe and is often referred to as “the forest giraffe.” When it was first described, it was mistaken as a new species of zebra. In it’s native Democratic Republic of the Congo, the okapi inspired folklore of an African unicorn due to its shyness and rarity.

"Eerie Alicorn"
2019

Graphite pencil drawing of an alicorn with four eyes and damaged wings. This mythical creature is thought to symbolize innocence, harmony, and spiritual purity, though this one in particular seems to be "corrupted." Four eyes have sometimes been used to represent spiritual sight or heightened awareness.

"Brindled Gnu Portrait Study"
2021

Also known as the blue wildebeest, the brindled gnu is a large African antelope and one of two species of wildebeest. It's scientific name, Connochaetes taurinus, can be loosely translated as "bull with flowing hair." Today, there are around 1.5 million individuals throughout its native range in southern Africa.
