There aren’t many things I still have from high school: my varsity letter from running 100m hurdles in track, my solo and ensemble contest judge reports and medals, a shoe box of specially folded paper notes I exchanged with middle school friends, (they’re silly and hilarious). But this, my high school art class color wheel, is the one thing from that period I see every day in its honored spot on my studio wall. Mr. Cody was an exceptional art teacher. We learned life drawing, pen and ink, color theory/painting, and mat cutting by hand. Excellence was demanded. If you cross cut a corner with the mat knife, you started over. In the Portfolio Workshop seniors assembled our portfolios that would later be hand-dropped at the college in a large 3x4’ leather portfolio holder. The excellent art classes and my work in them earned me placement into advanced university studio classes and a scholarship. I don’t know why I’m waxing nostalgic today. Maybe as I pack up my work for Friday, I’m grateful for what’s come before. Xo, L

Sharing a few of my favorite pieces in the Martin Puryear retrospective on now at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The work is poignant and mindbendingly beautiful. I’ve been twice and hope to go again before the exhibition comes down August 8. Any trip to the Cleveland Museum of Art is worth your time, but this show is really something special.
