Irasema, age 66. I told her that’s muy joven. // I’m here in Oaxaca to research the Afromexican community as they prepare to be counted in the Mexican census for the first time in 2020. In Oaxaca Centro, Afromexicans aren’t an organized community. To me, Irasema exhibited a beauty that I’ve seen in the grandmothers of my own community in Brooklyn and Detroit. If there isn’t a common experience, there’s a common spirit. 💫

The Aston Family has changed so much in the past 10 years. We have a whole new generation of young boys, and when they play, there is an unusual kindness and camaraderie for children who are from different parts of the country. The siblings and their spouses carry the same easy spirit and nature, and uphold the sacred tradition of a high-pitched chant before tequila shots. And the local Carnegie nieces and nephews are the leaders of those of us who can't make it back often enough. The new things are good and the old things better not change.

Justin used to roast me for so many things back in hs (my dancing, sartorial choices, and lack of social graces). So when he asked me to take his first headshots, it was a chance at redemption lol. But really this was an opportunity to capture the growth and light in a friend who is ever more becoming the person he aspires to be. Thanks for entrusting me with your image. Called my mom this morning and had a productive venting/crying session about how my career is always in treading water mode. Of course, she gave solid reassurance and advice. But what gave me the biggest lift was looking at these photos again and reminding myself of how it feels to tap into the creativity that isn’t for a w2 or 1099. Can’t thank enough for blessing me with this new trove of inspo and participating in my experiments to push my photo practice. 🌻🌻🌻
