Have you ever wanted to make your own enameled jewelry? Are you curious about adding color to metal?

Then join us for Enameling Basics on September 19! In this one-day workshop, instructor Andrew Thornton () will walk you through the entire enameling process and teach you how to create colorful designs on a metal surface.

Enameling is a fun and flexible method of fusing glass to metal; this workshop will teach you all you need to know to prepare your metal surface, apply dry enamel, and embellish your artwork with customized designs.

We had an excellent day! The Pittsburgh Glass Center hosted our shared teams for some hands-on learning, and our Executive Directors from each organization presented to the Allegheny Regional Assets District and we’re having a great time figuring out how to make that more true every day, collectively. Welcome Aidan Rhodes, () our new National Artist-in-Residence!

Aidan is a blacksmith and woodworker who recently completed their MFA at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Their work draws from the landscape and labor history of the Rust Belt to produce artifacts which explore the changing roles of industrial ruins through speculative fantasy and traditional crafts.

With degrees in Physics and Fine Art, and a background in both engineering and architecture, Aidan has worked across multiple fields and in diverse studio environments with the focus of making craft education accessible wherever they go. During their time at UWM Aidan also helped to develop the emerging Blacksmithing Certificate Program as the Windgate Contemporary Craft Fellow.

Aidan has already been busy moving in to the National Artist-in-Residence Studio and is getting ready to start teaching a Blacksmithing 1 Series in our Blacksmithing Studio next week!

From the Permanent Collection: "Wall Hanging" (1973) by Lenore Tawney

Lenore Tawney is a seminal figure in craft and contemporary art, recognized for her innovative work that led the way in the 20th century for contemporary fiber art to become what it is today. While Tawney is known widely for her sculptural weavings, this wall hanging from the Contemporary Craft permanent collection is a prime example of her integration of materials like feathers, bones, and pebbles into her work, bridging her sculptural assemblage with her textile pieces.

"Wall Hanging" by Lenore Tawney is currently on view at Romance in "Things to Come: OUTLINES, 1941–1947," a 3-part exhibition series which revisits the history and impact of Outlines, an experimental gallery created by CC's founder, Elizabeth “Betty” Rockwell Raphael.

Today is the FINAL DAY to see this and other works from our Permanent Collection—and learn more about Contemporary Craft's history as The Store for Arts and Crafts and People-Made Things—at Romance.

We're excited to invite you to Plated, an intimate courtyard dinner party with a creative twist: when dinner's over, you'll be taking your plate home with you.

In fact, you'll be taking home an entire hand-crafted table setting—a cohesive set of tableware including one dinner plate, one salad bowl, and one dessert plate—designed and handmade by one of 10 ceramic artists specially curated for this event.

Chef Kevin Hermann of will be creating the multi-course meal that will be served on each artist-made table setting and enjoyed amidst the ambiance of the Timmons Studios courtyard.

So join us on September 16 to enjoy a meal in the company of other craft lovers and culinary aficionados and to take home a unique table setting (and memories) that will last a lifetime.

Proceeds from Plated will support the craft community, with a portion going directly to the participating artists and a portion supporting new artist opportunities provided by the Store at Contemporary Craft.

Meet Lily Glass (), Columbus, Ohio-based artist whose Quantifying Care series is now available in the Store.

Through her handmade ceramics, Lily reflects on the labor of caregiving and her experiences as mother of two. Beautifully accompanying the themes of our current exhibition, "Revolutionary Care," the Quantifying Care series reflects on specific, memorable instances of caregiving and mothering in the title of each piece: “a bell for every lullaby,” “a coil for every boo-boo kissed,” or “a plate for every heirloom recipe used.”

Lily's use of clay brings an ecofeminist lens to ceramics, drawing attention to the treatment of women as well as the natural world. In the case of Quantifying Care, the result is a collection of elevated, functional objects which speak to the embodied care that goes into craft—and being human.

We're in the final days of "Revolutionary Care: Amber Doe, Bekezela Mguni, and Alisha B Wormsley" on view through September 5 in the Main Gallery.

Rooted in the notion of care as an act of resistance through love, boundary-setting, self-determination, and visionary dreaming, this exhibition has been a particularly meaningful site for gathering, thinking, and visioning together.

Since the exhibition's opening in May, it has brought family, friends, and strangers together to contemplate our collective inheritances and how to build a future grounded in collective freedom and community care.

Through artist talks, screenings, and community programing, the work of the three exhibiting artists has reached far beyond the gallery and inspired acts of creation, communing, and care in our community. Now, as we close out the exhibition, please join us for a free Meditation on Care and closing ritual on Saturday, September 5. Melissa's exhibition, "Bodies in Motion" lives up to its name, with ceiling-hung textiles that gently rock as you walk by, responding to the motion of your own body as you take in the immersive experience.

Join Matt Iannacci of on Saturday, September 5 to learn the art of woodturning by making your very own pen!

In this introductory woodturning workshop, students will learn the foundations of woodturning to create a (functional!) wooden ballpoint pen. This class will explore the lathe, different methods of shaping wood, and shop safety. All materials, including the pen hardware, are provided.

Our introductory wood turning workshops often sell out quickly, and this is a great chance to try your hand at the lathe and come away with a bespoke keepsake. Spaces are still available, but sales will end soon, so register now!
