Interested in designing your very own furniture? We're kicking off our new Week-Long Summer Workshops NEXT WEEK with Introduction to Woodworking: Table Design with Karen Ernst!

Join this workshop to learn how wood can be used as a medium for creative expression in this immersive, week-long workshop! Students will be introduced to the basics of woodworking through the design and construction of a table. Methods for preparing, connecting, and shaping solid wood furniture elements will be covered while we view the work of contemporary furniture artists and explore methods for creating functional but unique pieces of furniture.

No woodworking experience is necessary (or expected)! Come eager to learn and ready to finish the week by taking home your very own table!

This workshop runs from Monday, June 22 – Friday, June 26, from 10 AM - 5 PM each day.

There's still time to sign up! Learn more and register HERE: https://contemporarycraft.org/event/introduction-to-woodworking-table-design-with-karen-ernst/

When Alicia DeVrio () first arrived in Pittsburgh in 2020, she was looking for a sense of belonging. At a multi-week weaving workshop at Contemporary Craft, she found what she had been looking for.

In the workshop, Alicia learned alongside artists who had spent decades refining their practice as well as peers just beginning their creative journeys. At the loom, she found herself embedded in a community in which relationships are built across age, background, and experience.

These unique and enriching connections are at the heart of what Contemporary Craft works to make possible. They are also how craft traditions endure.

Alicia’s involvement with Contemporary Craft has continued to grow: looking for ways to give back, Alicia has partnered with fellow CMU student and weaver Luca Budofsky () to secure grant funding to restore Contemporary Craft’s Dobby Loom. She's also currently honing her weaving practice in the CC Studios as a current Regional Artist-in-Residence.

You can learn more about Alicia and her journey in our Sounds from the Studio Podcast episode with her HERE: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2Jfcdc2PaWIRXgm2pNNOUu?si=M33xjXr1QNSZMg4AVlfzcw

Contemporary Craft depends on your support to help people like Alicia grow into vital members of the craft community. Consider making a gift today to ensure that community members continue to have access to the experiences that help them learn, connect, and grow. "archive this!" opens TODAY in our Gerri Kay Exhibition Cases!

This iteration of "archive this!" focuses on tableware design that reflects the evolving styles and trends in table setting since the 1970s.

The "archive this!" series features selections from the Contemporary Craft (CC) permanent collection. First started in 1980 after the closing of our first exhibition, Art in Modern Handcrafts, the CC permanent collection is a broad representation of the post-war studio craft movement and beyond. Beginning in the fall of 2022, CC embarked on an archival project to organize and engage our exhibition archive and permanent collection.

"archive this!" will be on view through October 10. Our galleries are open Monday -Saturday from 10 AM -5 PM, and admission is always free. Visit soon and see the show!

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Rosemary Gould. While most of her time was spent in Michigan, she briefly called Pittsburgh home. And even after returning to Michigan, Rosemary continued to visit and teach occasionally at Contemporary Craft.

An early friend and supporter of our work, we’ll miss Rosemary and continue to appreciate her contributions. It’s amazing the connections that Rosemary made during her time in our city, and even how her life overlapped and connected our Executive Director here in Pittsburgh, with that of Rachel’s wife while in Michigan.

Rosemary’s son Christopher asked that we share this news with our community, so that others who knew her might also be aware.

Her obituary follows

Celebrate the life of Rosemary Gould and join others in sharing memories, stories, and condolences.

Have you seen "Revolutionary Care" yet? Stop by our Main Gallery to check out this beautiful show!

Revolutionary Care is a daily act of resistance through love, boundary-setting, self-determination, and visionary dreaming. This exhibition brings together three artists, Amber Doe, Bekezela Mguni, and Alisha B Wormsley, who each demonstrate and articulate care in their own distinct visual languages. Through practices of individual and collective care, and by activating the power of generative and restorative healing, this exhibition opens a gateway—calls us to imagine and build a society rooted in liberation and a pathway toward freedom. Care is both an inheritance and a revolutionary future, carried forward in the gesture of making.

The exhibition is on now through September 5. Our galleries are open Monday – Saturday from 10 AM - 5 PM, and admission is always free.

"Revolutionary Care" is in partnership with Sibyls Shrine, a network of Black artists who m/other in Pittsburgh, PA and beyond.

This exhibition is part of Handwork 2026.
