Leading Lady Sybil Ludington was a young Revolutionary War Heroine who is often thought of as female folk hero. Sybil is often referred to as the female Paul Revere. Revere, however, was caught. 16 year old Sybil completed the rounds, and returned with a militia of her father’s men prepared to push the British back to their fleet in the Long Island Sound! However, some dispute the claims that she rode her horse through the night to warn of a British attack.

Then consider that instead of Sybil Ludington being referred to as the female Paul Revere, she could be known as the person who succeeded in warning of an impending British attack. Leading Lady Anne Vetch Murray D**e was an American Doctor who helped establish the American Fund for French Wounded, or the AAFW, Co-Founder & Chair of the American Committee for Devastated France during WWII. Anne joined her friend to work in France, where the two dedicated themselves to rebuilding France during and after the Great War. They became recipients of the Croix de Guerre, and members of the French Legion of Honor. Anne is also became the First Woman Elected to the French Academy of Agriculture.

Leading Lady Anne Tracy Morgan was an American heiress, philanthropist, and a member of “The Mink Brigade”. If you are unfamiliar with this group, they utilized their wealth to protect those on the strike lines in the 1900's. Anne Morgan was also an author, and she was a devoted advocate. Anne was the treasurer of the American Fund for the French Wounded, a member of the America Ice Flotilla Committee, responsible for providing resources for wounded soldiers, and the first woman appointed commander of The French Legion of Honor. She was a recipient of the National Institute of Social Science Medal, a co-founder of the Society for the Prevention of Useless Giving, a founding member of The Colony Club, the founder of The Franco-American Museum of the Château de Blérancourt, and she became the first woman to receive the marble plaque in the Court of Honor at the Hôtel des Invalides (posthumously). Anne Morgan lived a life so full that it is nearly unbelievable, and yet, she did all of the things that she did - in the early to mid 1900's.

Anne's story is inspiring, and I hope that you enjoy learning it! She changed history, and the lives and stories of many throughout not just the United States, but in many regions of France, too. She was NASA’s Leading Structural Analyst for the Hubble Telescope, and she was appointed the Director of Safety and Mission Assurance post-Columbia Disaster.

Leading Lady Dr. Roberta Bondar was the 18th woman to go to space! She became Canada’ s first female astronaut, and the first Ukrainian-Candian woman in space. She is an author, a photographer, a neurologist, and a scientist. She is an environmental interpreter, a speaker, and she is committed to public service. She became the first woman to receive the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and she is an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Leading Lady Dr. Millie Elizabeth Hughes-Fulford was the 17th woman in space, the first woman scientist in space. She was part of the first crew to include three women, and she was also NASA’s first female payload specialist in orbit. Millie became the first representative of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in space, she was an American medical investigator, a molecular biologist, and a chemist.

Today marks the anniversary of the day that Mabel Ping-Hua Lee mounted a horse in Washington Square Park. Her historic, though rarely known ride took place on the afternoon of May 4, 1912. She lead one of the largest groups of suffragists the nation had ever seen. They marched through the East Side of New York City down Fifth Avenue, starting their procession through the Washington Square Arch. Their demand "Votes for Women" were on sashes they wore, and flags they carried.

Mabel and her family were Chinese immigrants who lived in the United States during a time of The Chinese Exclusion Act. Mabel received a visa to study in Brooklyn on a scholarship. She was sixteen years old. She went on to continue to fight for Women's Rights, Chinese Immigrants Rights, and the right to vote for all people, despite not being a citizen of the United States.

The next time you have an opportunity to visit New York City. Perhaps you will look at Washington Square Park a bit differently. I enjoy visiting the park, and I hope that you do too. Please think of Mabel and her horse if you visit.

Leading Lady Clara Lemlich Shavelson was a Ukrainian-American Activist, an International Ladies Garment Worker’s Union Leader, the founder of the Progressive Women’s Councils, and she is considered to be the leader of the Uprise of 20,000, a massive strike that took place in the garment district in New York City shortly before the tragedy known as the historic Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.
