Before there was a National Opera House, there was a little girl in Madison, North Carolina, dreaming bigger than ever.

Mary Cardwell Dawson was born in Madison, NC. Decades later, on Feburay 2025, a mural there honors the path she carved: founder of the National Negro Opera Company, visionary, trailblazer, the reason our doors exist today.

History Doesn't Wait. Neither did she.

Every child who walks past that mural gets to see what's possible when you refuse to wait for permission. We hope it inspires the next generation of dreamers, singers, and history-makers to do great things just like Mary did.

Help us preserve her legacy and the historic house she built her dream inside of. Every dollar keeps her story and the historic opera house. Standing for the kids who need to see it.

A major investment is giving new life to one of Pittsburgh’s most important Black historic sites. The National Opera House has been awarded a $1.75 million grant from the Mellon Foundation to continue the restoration and preservation of the historic property at 7101 Apple Street in Pittsburgh.
