Brb crying in the coffee shop while I write my prospectus.

What’s a prospectus? Essentially an outline of my dissertation, including a project overview, a literature review, summary of methodologies being used, and what each chapter will entail. I won’t be saying much for a bit about my project (still gotta get it approved by my committee!) but for now, know that it will definitely be honoring the local theatre communities that shaped me.

Even on spring break, grad school doesn’t end.

First draft of the prospectus is due in less than a week. Time to get the lit review done, find the gaps in the scholarship, and make some attempt at an argument. 🫣

Arguably the hardest part of comprehensive exams - the writing - is done! After 3 weeks, 6 essays, and 119 pages, I’ve turned in my work to my advisors. They’ll read through and prep questions for my oral defense which will take place in a little over a week.

While we’re not out of the woods quite yet, I’m taking a moment to to celebrate the work I’ve done so far! 😊

I’m still in awe of last evening’s invited dress for Pitt Musical Theatre Club’s production of INTO THE WOODS. This entirely student run production was filled to the brim with talent onstage and off. Performances were so superb all around, there’s not quite one or two people to easily single out. It was a true ensemble show! Although, the celebrity guest appearance by Becki Toth as the voice of the Giant might have been my favorite (move over, Hillary Clinton! IYKYK).

Beyond the magic of the actors, I was astounded at the wonderful vocals, which are a true testament to the work of Monica Fazzolari. Sondheim is not easy music and it was clear everybody had done their homework. Scenic/props designer Aidan Kelleher created a magical world onstage, enhanced by the sharp and imaginative lighting and sound design by Hayley Rizor and Sadie Seggerson respectively. Finally, director Sam Couch handles this work with an absolute creativity that takes the text seriously and insists the performers do as well.

Sondheim only truly reveals his hand upon subsequent viewings and listenings. This was not my first trip in the woods. Because of that, I was really dropped into the intricate lyrics of Sondheim and genius dialogue by Lapine - for example, the clever number imagery in “It Takes Two” excited me in ways it hadn’t before. This show from the late 1980s might be the most relevant it has ever been, with questions of community responsibility, moral ambiguity, and legacy. It’s not often we get a REALLY good production of INTO THE WOODS. MTC’s staging is that.

Take the journey.

The scholarship of Dr. Stacy Wolf was introduced to me in undergrad through Penn State’s musical theatre history course, taught by the brilliant Dr. Susan Russell.

Dr. Wolf’s outlook on the American musical has been a true guidepost in my work as a scholar and dramaturg. Her books validate the fan within me and reaffirm the significance of the work I do - especially when it comes to high school theatre.

Thank you for these words, Dr. Wolf, and thank you Dr. Russell for introducing me to them! 💙

Writing and writing and writing. ✍️

Week 2 of comprehensive exams are underway! This week, I’m shifting to my textual discourses section of the exam as I write about Oscar Hammerstein II’s collaborations with Richard Rodgers in the 1940s and 1950s.

On the docket, we have an examination of how Hammerstein’s lyricism guided his musical plays of the ‘40s and ‘50s as well as considerations of Asian and Asian American representation in SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and FLOWER DRUM SONG.

This summer, we’re hittin’ the road BEYOND BROADWAY! This 6-week online course studies the Broadway-style musical in communities beyond the commercial theatre district in New York and the United States. We’ll travel to South Korea, Germany, France, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Japan, and more on our road trip. At each stop, we’ll consider how each country views the musical and localizes it with their own cultures and tradition.

BEYOND BROADWAY is all about looking at why musicals matter. Beyond the spectacle. Beyond the show tunes. Beyond the business. What do musicals mean to us on a personal level?

This course is open to all University of Pittsburgh students - any major and non-degree-seeking students are welcome to enroll!

First day of comprehensive exams as a PhD student in Theatre and Performance Studies! ✨

This week, I’ll be writing two essays that deal with affect theory and its relationship to musical theatre studies. Theory has never been my strong suit — but the work I’ve done over the past year with my faculty has really improved my confidence in the area.

So far, so good. Comps are not a sprint — they’re a marathon.

We can chat about P.T. Barnum later. But please — let’s just enjoy this absolute banger by Pasek and Paul.

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC(AL) 🎶

Yesterday, I had the privilege of chatting with the cast of ’s upcoming production of MAMMA MIA! We chatted about the show’s history and what it meant to New Yorkers and the country in the weeks following 9/11. What can a production of MAMMA MIA mean in 2026? The students were absolutely dropped in and we had a lovely conversation exploring what the show has meant and can mean to the Cumberland Valley community.

This is my 6th year serving as the production dramaturg for Cumberland Valley, my alma mater. This program means the world to me—because it’s where I got my start. It’s also what prompted my rehearsal talk this year. We ended our conversation with a discussion of, “Who do you have to thank for you being here?” Kids answered: “My mom.” “My teacher.” “My friend.” It was an excellent display of empathy and community building on their part.

runs April 16-19th at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, PA. Who needs to go to Greece to experience a summer wedding when you can just come here? 💙
