In February of 1889, Vincent van Gogh was invited to submit work to an annual exhibition by a society of painters based in Brussels called Les XX. While initially criticized by Henry de Groux, his work was met with high praise and defended mightily by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Signac. Below are three works submitted to the exhibition: 'Red Vineyard' (1888), 'Sunflowers' (1889), and 'Flowering Orchards' (1889).

After leaving Saint-Rémy in May 1890, Vincent van Gogh began seeing Dr. Paul Gachet. Gachet had a reputation for treating artists. Letters from Vincent to his brother, Theo, from that time describe an obsession with "memories of the North." His paintings from that era focus on scenes reminiscent of the North of France. He would go on to describe that his paintings echo his "sadness and extreme loneliness."

These three works were painting during that time in the Parisian suburb Auvers-sur-Oise. They are 'White House at Night' (1890), 'The Church at Auvers' (1890), and 'Tree Roots" (1890) which is thought to be his final piece, presumed to be worked on just hours before his death.

According to Frida Kahlo, magenta represents "Blood? Well, who knows!" Frida was inspired by the Mexican Revolution of the early 1900's, so much so that she changed her birth year to 1910 to correspond with the beginning of the revolution despite actually being born in 1907. This projection depicts scenes of war, almost certainly inspired by Mexico's fight for freedom from the cruelties of Porfirio Díaz.

What do you think of when you see magenta?

Bottoms up — our skull flasks are yours to take home! Van Gogh painted “Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette” in c. 1886. Some say it was a reminder for death and others say it was for satirical purposes ☠️ What do you think?
