“C.S. Lewis warned that modernity was making a huge mistake by confusing being “nice” versus “being good”. In his view, “niceness” is often just a product of a comfortable life, good health, or a naturally easygoing temperament. It costs us nothing.

True “goodness,” however, requires moral courage, sacrifice, & a fierce commitment to truth, even when it makes people uncomfortable.

Lewis brilliantly illustrated this philosophy through Aslan, in The Chronicles of Narnia.

Throughout the books, characters are repeatedly warned that Aslan is “not a tame lion.” He is not always “nice.” He doesn’t coddle, he doesn’t flatter, & he can be deeply terrifying.

Yet, he is fundamentally good. Aslan represents a love that is fierce & uncompromising.

He cares far too much about the character & rescue of Narnia to simply be polite to toxic behavior & the forces of evil.”
