Ready to SHOW UP with a new 10-minute play?

• Submit a new, unproduced 10-minute play engaging the conference theme, SHOWING UP
• This is a juried event, and only the first 150 plays received will be considered
• Selected plays will receive a staged reading at MATC 2027
• Each selected play is assigned a creative team, including the playwright, a director, and up to four actors
• Playwrights receive live feedback from the Symposium Respondent and conference attendees
• Scripts should be no more than 10 minutes long, with a maximum of four actors or a doubling plan

Ready to champion a new play?

• Submit a new, unproduced, full-length play that is ready for production
• Directors and dramaturgs may submit plays they want to champion
• Playwrights may self-submit if they are willing to direct their own play
• Selected works receive a staged reading of the first act at MATC 2027
• MATC provides a creative team, including a director or dramaturg and four actors
• Full scripts may be shared with conference attendees interested in future productions

Ready to SHOW UP at your first national conference?

• Open to undergraduate and graduate students who have not yet presented at a national conference
• Separate debut panels for undergraduate and graduate presenters
• Papers welcome on theatre history, theory, or dramatic literature
• Selected presenters receive free conference registration and admission to the conference luncheon
• Selected presenters also receive a one-year MATC membership and a $200 cash prize
• Participants are paired with a conference mentor and take part in a pre-conference professionalization session

Deadline: Friday, October 16, 2026
Papers should be 7–10 pages / 1,750–2,500 words.

• Histories of gathering, spectatorship, assembly, and community formation
• Who has been permitted, compelled, or prevented from showing up
• Archival silence, incomplete documentation, and lost performances
• Recoveries of overlooked artists and performance traditions
• The ethical responsibilities of theatre historians
• Experimental formats and “well-behaved academic anarchy”
