The Baron of Deadwood Well (long story below if you care)

I am actually so happy with this portrait of my beloved Baron! He lost his nearly 8-month battle with cancer earlier this week. When he first got sick, I tried to paint him. I wanted to capture him in all his glory while I still couldβ€”his fins were so vibrant, especially when the light passed through them and they would flash brilliant red. But that first attempt just really fell short...

This lead me on a campaign to learn how to capture light. I have been learning, practicing, bashing my head off my desk, etc. as the Baron slowly weakened. On Monday morning, he did not wake up. I took one day to grieve, and then set to work.

I finished this painting yesterday, and I feel such a sense of relief. This is him, and I will be framing it and displaying it proudly in his honor. Thank you, Baron, for the 3 years we had together. Rest easy, little friend.

Work in progress... My betta fish passed away on Monday, so I'm working on painting his portrait. I did paint him a while ago, but I was really struggling to capture his incredible vibrancy. Hoping that this time I will get closer to capturing it.

Pictured is a little color key I did this morning, the preliminary sketchbook drawing from yesterday, and some photos of him I am using for inspiration. Fingers crossed I can put it all together in the final painting.

HUGE sketchbook dump! I'm taking the Sketching From Imagination class with Sorie Kim right now πŸ’•

SKETCH 🌞 I like to sketch in colored pencils lately. They're buildable in opacity, but not erasable. It helps me commit and not overwork the sketch without the anxiety that drawing direct in pen sometimes causes.

FINAL 🌞 Once I get a sketch I like, I hate trying to recreate it for the final piece as I find it usually loses some of its soul. To avoid this (and also because I'm lazy), I then scan my sketch and resize it digitally before printing it out and tracing it directly onto my watercolor paper.
