We have had many folks wanting to know how we got started in the Karaoke business so I finally set down and wrote a little about how it all started (to the
best of my memory, if I have forgotten anything please let me know so I can add it here)
Of course it all started with my marriage to Pam the love of my life that started June 14th 1984, little did I know she would turn our life into an entertainment business filled with music/singing and memories filled with the good times meeting many, many friends along the way. It all started around 1988 or 89 I over heard Pam singing to the radio and to me she was sounding better than the original singer. At that time the only thing out there to sing too was backing tracks (music only) on cassette tape. I bought her a small stereo with a microphone input and she started to sing on it using the backing tracks. She started singing country tunes then moved into gospel with the help of my father and was singing in churches and socials soon after. Singing at Flea markets and Opry shows was the norm every weekend it seemed, and then some standing gigs at some dinner clubs and restaurants around the area. Pam has that natural Arkansas country voice and later would prove to show the singing talent that her brothers have as well. Pam has performed on the Johnny High Country Music R***e Show several times with starting singers like Leann Rimes and many others that are country artists today. She also opened for Sheb Wooly (purple people eater song) and he played Ben Culter on the popular TV show “Rawhide”. and later on Pam had the honor of being able to sing with the legendary David Frizzell on his famous song “You’re the Reason God made Oklahoma“ at a Talent Search contest/show in the area put together by David Frizzell with Pam and I gathering the talent in the area through our Karaoke store and our Karaoke shows in North Texas and Southern Oklahoma areas, also offering the music and sound for the Final Competition but that all came much later. It started One day as I was reading the entertainment section of the Dallas morning news I noticed an ad for a thing called Singing Karaoke at Dave & Busters in Dallas Texas. I called to see what this Karaoke thing was and had no idea that was going to be the next entertainment that would sweep the country. Karaoke entertainment came from Japan and hit the west coast first then started spreading across the country. Pam and I made the trip one night to Dave and Busters and was so amazed that the words to the song was on the TV screen and the place was packed with patrons having a great time. Well Pam took her turn at the microphone and brought down the house. The KJ (Karaoke Jockey) liked her voice so well that he recommended that she enter a Karaoke contest that was going on at Bobby Socks in the West End entertainment district of Dallas Texas. At that time the only karaoke shows in Dallas was at the two Dave and Busters and at the Bobby Socks Club at the west end. Well Pam entered the Karaoke Contest went on to win it all. Her prizes was an all expense paid trip to Cancun Mexico for two and a Pioneer Laser Disc Karaoke System with a small music library which is what we used to get started in our many years of Karaoke Shows and entertainment to come. Building the music library was very expensive at the time costing $150 for 28 songs on a large laserdisc that had a video behind the words. To my knowledge Pam and I was the first to bring Karaoke to the North Texas and Southern Oklahoma area around 1991. Our first show was at the VFW in Sherman Texas and soon after that we started doing the first Friday of each month there and it wasn’t long we started doing the second Friday of each month at the Sherman Elk’s Lodge. The crowds were growing fast as well as the popularity. With a large following we started getting bookings nightly playing North Texas and Southern Okla. We had clubs calling us to bring this entertainment that they was hearing so much about to their club but we was getting spread very thin and just had to pick and choose where we wanted to play. Thank goodness a few years later another Karaoke soon started up in the area to help cover the growth. We soon left the VFW and started doing every weekend in the Club at the Sherman Bowling Center, we played every Saturday night there for most of 10 years. Our shows took us from Durant. Ok to Paris Tx to Denton, Tx and everywhere in between. Seeing all the interest in Karaoke we soon opened a Karaoke store in Sherman, Tx. We had the honor of helping others follow their dream of Singing or doing their own Karaoke shows. We also met a good friend(and singer)that was plant manager at the local Dr Pepper company and he came up with a promotion that would rock the area. “Singer’s Dream Road To Nashville” This helped everyone involved in so many ways. Dr Pepper and our Singer’s Dream Karaoke Store sponsored the largest talent search the area has ever seen that included all the major retail stores, local radio stations as well as our Karaoke store and the clubs we played at. It was great publicity for all and a great opportunity for all the local singers to perform and win great prizes. This helped increase sells and increased traffic for all….Thanks Kennis for all you did. Dominoes Pizza, Blue Bunny Ice Cream, Albertson's, Wal-mart, Tom Thumb, K-mart etc. was just a few establishments that we brought our show/contest to. It was a summer event that went for 2 years in row coming to a close at the Whitesboro Peanut festival in October . We had the karaoke store about 3 years and had helped start many a karaoke shows in the area and soon decided to sell out the store go back to just doing our shows which left more time for just Pam and I. After about 14 years of Karaoke shows we decided to hang up the microphone for a while and then after a few years we started our shows back up. The technology has changed since we’ve been gone and all the karaoke music with graphics is loaded on a hard drive and everything from singer rotation to the song library is now done by computer, so no more having to carry all those CD’s around. With full time jobs we are going to try and keep it on a smaller scale this time for just a good time of singing and fun….so keep singing and hope to see you at our Karaoke shows soon. Thanks Texomaland for all your support and interest....
