Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration because John Adams knew he’d sound nicer.

Adams could absolutely write, but he believed Jefferson had a smoother, more elegant style. Adams also knew he annoyed people too much to be the public face of the document. So essentially, America’s founding document exists because Adams understood branding before branding existed.

The Continental Congress was basically the world’s most stressful group project.

If you think organizing a committee at work is hard, imagine trying to convince thirteen colonies to commit treason against the most powerful empire on Earth. The delegates argued for weeks over independence, slavery, trade, taxes, and who should write what. “1776” captures this beautifully: exhausted men in wigs sweating through Philadelphia summer heat while debating the future of an entire nation.

Did you know? John Adams really was “obnoxious and disliked.”

The musical didn’t invent that running joke to get laughs. John Adams himself once admitted that people found him difficult, blunt, and argumentative. In Congress, he pushed for independence while many delegates wanted to avoid upsetting Britain. So when the cast belts out “Sit Down, John,” it’s actually pretty historically accurate. Imagine being so passionate about freedom that everyone around you collectively needs a snack and a nap because of you.

No time is wasted, the rehearsals begin,

"For God's sake, John, sit down!" they all cry,
As 1776 brings the Fourth of July.
The debate is heating up, the votes pouring in...
But tell me, who’s going to play the violin? 📜✍️
